Aluminium Group Charles & Ray Eames, 1958 Aluminium Group The Aluminium Chair is one of the greatest furniture designs of the 20th century. It was originally created for a private home in Columbus, Indiana in the US, built by the architects Eero Saarinen and Alexan der Girard in the middle of the 1950s. Charles and Ray Eames blazed a new trail in the construction principles behind the chair. They abandoned the conventional idea of the seat shell and instead stretched fabric or leather between the two alumini um sides tightly but not rigidly. It adapts to the body snugly and delivers great comfort, even without extensive up holstery. The shape of the Aluminium Chair is clear and transparent, its construction easy to see. Some pieces from the Aluminium Group are now available in the new version “Dark Chrome” (EA 105, EA 107, EA 108, EA 117, EA 119), with dark chrome-plated aluminium parts. The seat cover is made of premium leather on both sides and its armrests are also covered in high-quality leather. These materials, brought together in a painsta king manufacturing process, create the well-known silhouette of this iconic classic, but with new, modern touches.
