One of the great advantages of pass-tufted carpet is its ability to fit a space—any space—perfectly. In fact, the mechanised process that creates the carpet is so precise that it is often selected specifically for its exactitude; pass-tufting is the ideal way to cover an irregularlyshaped room with a seamless, wall-to-wall installation. Area rugs can also be pass-tufted with beautiful results. All pass-tufted carpets are created to custom dimensions and colours chosen from an extensive and sophisticated palette.

Textures & Fibres As in all Tai Ping’s custom carpets, texture and fibre choice are paramount in determining the character and aesthetic of the final product. Pass-tufted carpet can be produced in cut pile or loop, cut-and-loop, and shag pile, and is available in the same fibres as Tai Ping’s finest hand-tufted collections. 100% New Zealand wool is the most common choice for pass-tufted carpets, though they are made regularly from luxurious silks, cotton and flax.

Finishing — Over-tufting & Carving A pass-tufted carpet can be transformed into a completely unique piece with the addition of hand-finishing. Once a carpet has been tufted on the pass machine, it is taken to the hand-tufting workshop where Tai Ping’s skilled artisans can add custom pattern and texture by hand. There are two main techniques: over-tufting and handcarving. In the first, a second pattern is hand-tufted on top of the pass-tufted ground; in the second, the pile is cut with scissors or a razor to create a one-of-a–kind sculpted surface.
