Project Case History Emerson Elementary School Joplin, Missouri Situation Emerson Elementary was a disaster recovery project for the US Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in response to the EF-5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. In an attempt to restore a sense of normalcy to the area, school superintendent C.J. Huff pledged that schools would reopen as scheduled for the new school year, making modular construction a viable solution to expedite the project. Solution During the course of 30 days, nine modular units were prepared in Houston, Texas and hauled over 600 miles to be assembled on a school property in Joplin, Missouri to create an elementary school for the more than 200 Emerson students displaced by the tornado. Williams Scotsman was chosen for their high quality service reputation, competitive product offering, and commitment to meeting the aggressive construction timeline guaranteed by the school superintendent. Result The Williams Scotsman team prepared, delivered and assembled over 8,000 square feet of space for students, teachers and administrators. In addition to the modular buildings, Williams Scotsman provided electrical, plumbing, fire safety, phone and data services.
