Vestas Cold Climate Solutions

Product catalog summary
Overview of Vestas Cold Climate Solutions
Vestas offers a range of solutions designed to ensure safe and efficient energy production in cold climates. These include the Vestas Low Temperature Option, Vestas Ice Detection™, Vestas De-Icing™, and Vestas Anti-Icing System™, which can be combined with additional options like Vestas Ice Assessment™ and Vestas Ice Control to enhance power plant performance.
Vestas Low Temperature Option
This option allows wind turbines to operate in ambient temperatures as low as -30°C and withstand temperatures down to -40°C when paused. It uses heating elements to maintain the operation of temperature-sensitive components and is installed on over 5,000 turbines worldwide.
Vestas Ice Detection™
The system assesses ice conditions on the rotor using sensors on each blade to monitor changes in frequency flow oscillation, evaluating the risk of ice throw. It includes nacelle-based and power curve-based ice detection methods.
Vestas De-Icing™
This system maximizes energy production by de-icing blades using the Vestas SCADA system. It optimizes energy use by focusing on the outer third of the blade and the leading edge towards the tip.
Vestas Anti-Icing System™
This system continuously monitors and removes ice on blades during operation, using independent heating elements for targeted anti-icing action. It is suitable for sites with varying ice severity and has received over 1 GW of orders.
Vestas Ice Assessment™
Utilizing advanced meteorological models, this tool predicts icing exposure and conditions for each turbine, assessing potential energy production losses due to ice.
Vestas Ice Control
An optional feature of the Vestas SCADA system, it coordinates turbine yawing and pausing with ice mitigation actions, enhancing safety by pausing operations during critical ice build-up and resuming when safe.
Availability
The availability of these solutions varies by turbine type, and further information can be obtained from local Vestas Sales & Service offices.

The Vestas Cold Climate Solutions include Vestas Low Temperature Option, Vestas Ice Detection™, Vestas De-Icing™ and Vestas Anti-Icing System™, which can be combined with additional options and solutions such as Vestas Ice Assessment™ and Vestas Ice Control to enhance the performance of the power plant. Vestas Low Temperature Option The Vestas Low Temperature Option enables wind turbine operation in ambient temperatures as low as -30°C and safe withstanding of an ambient temperature as low as -40°C in pause. By using heating elements, it ensures continued and safe operation of temperature-sensitive components. Installed on more than 5,000 turbines worldwide, Vestas Low Temperature Option is a proven high performer in cold climate conditions. Vestas Ice Detection™ The Vestas Ice Detection™ system assesses the ice conditions on the rotor, enabling operational strategies to increase safety. Through sensors installed on each blade, it monitors changes in the natural frequency flow oscillation produced by the turbine operation, enabling to evaluate the risk of ice throw. Vestas' solutions for ice detection also include nacelle-based ice detection, which monitors ice conditions on the nacelle, and power curve-based ice detection, which detects ice build-up through the degradation of the power curve performance.

Vestas De-Icing™ Availability of Vestas De-Icing™ V112-3.45 MW® V117-3.45 MW® V117-4.2 MW™ V126-3.45 MW® The Vestas De-Icing™ system maximises the energy production of wind turbines in icy conditions by de-icing the blades. Activated by the Vestas SCADA system, the Vestas De-Icing™ system pauses the turbine operation in order to realise the de-icing action, heating and circulating air within the blades. The energy use of the system is optimised by concentrating the de-icing action on the outer third of a turbine blade full chord and the remaining outer two-thirds of the leading edge towards the...
