2017 Shadow Detection System

2017 Shadow Detection System

2017 Shadow Detection System

Product catalog summary
Overview: The Vestas Shadow Detection System (VSDS) is designed to optimize wind turbine energy production while minimizing the negative impact of shadow flicker on surrounding inhabited areas. Shadow flicker occurs when sunlight is intermittently blocked by rotating turbine blades. The system is uniquely configured for each turbine to ensure compliance with local requirements.
Key Benefits:
  • Maximizes energy production while avoiding shadow flicker.
  • Integrated into the Vestas control system.
  • Reliable and proven technology.
System Components: The VSDS includes light intensity sensors and a shadow controller. Sensors are placed on the east and west sides of the turbine tower to measure light intensity differences, determining shadow flicker presence.
Shadow Flicker Management: The shadow controller uses site-specific light intensity thresholds and schedules to manage turbine operation. If light intensity exceeds the threshold, the turbine pauses to prevent shadow flicker. The system logs these pauses and automatically restarts the turbine after the shadow period.
Example Operation: At 5:00 P.M., if a turbine's shadow affects a nearby building and exceeds the light intensity threshold, the turbine pauses to prevent shadow flicker, while other turbines continue operating.
Availability: The VSDS is available for various Vestas turbine models, including V90-2.0 MW™, V100-2.0 MW®, V110-2.0 MW®, and others up to V162-5.6 MW™.
Contact Information: For more details, contact the local Vestas office.

2017 Shadow Detection System-1

Benefits of Vestas Shadow Detection System: • Maximise energy production while avoiding shadow flicker • Integrated into the Vestas control system • Reliable and proven technology Vestas Shadow Detection System Maximising wind turbine energy production while avoiding shadow flicker on surrounding inhabited areas Minimising negative impact on surroundings The Vestas Shadow Detection System is a solution designed to tailer turbine operation to minimise the negative impact of shadow flicker on surroundings. Shadow flicker occurs when sunlight on a certain spot is continously broken by the rotating turbine blades. Uniquely configured for each turbine, VSDS ensures maximum turbine energy production, while adhering to local requirements and avoiding shadow flicker on surrounding inhabited areas.

Example of Shadow Detection System Operation: At 5:00 PM. the shadow casted by wind turbine B reaches the nearby building. With light intensity measured to be above the established threshold, turbine B is temporarily paused to avoid the negative impact of shadow flicker. The remaining turbines in the wind farm continue to operate.
