Surface Preparation Read the Lead Warning in Cautions section. Clean and dry surface thoroughly, removing all dirt, dust, rust, grease and wax. Scrape off loose paint. Remove wallpaper. Plaster cracks and spot prime. Dull glossy surfaces with gloss remover or sandpaper. Remove chalky residue and prime unpainted plaster and wallboard with a latex wall primer. Prime all previously painted surfaces with interior PVA latex primer or stain blocking primer for a smooth, uniform surface.
