Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB)

Product catalog summary
Introduction
THERMAFIBER® Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB) are designed for superior sound and fire performance in wall and ceiling assemblies. These mineral-fiber blankets are noncombustible, offering high sound attenuation and contributing to high fire ratings, ideal for multi-family residential projects, hotels, offices, and retail businesses.
System Performance
THERMAFIBER SAFBs are recognized for their high quality, offering more fire, sound, and thermal tests than other insulation products. They resist sagging due to high density and enhance fire protection in various assemblies, effectively reducing low-frequency sound levels.
Superior Sound Attenuation
THERMAFIBER SAFBs significantly improve sound attenuation ratings, outperforming glass fiber insulation. For instance, a 3-5/8" steel-framed wall with 5/8" gypsum panels achieved an STC of 49 with 3" THERMAFIBER SAFBs, compared to STC 47 with glass fiber insulation.
Superior Fire Resistance
THERMAFIBER products are noncombustible and withstand temperatures over 2,000 °F, maintaining integrity longer than glass fiber insulation in fire tests, making them highly effective in fire protection.
Environmental Benefits
THERMAFIBER SAFBs contain over 80% recycled content, contributing to LEED® credits and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by lowering energy needs for heating and cooling. They meet high standards for indoor air quality, being inorganic and resistant to mold and mildew.
Fire Performance Testing
THERMAFIBER SAFBs have been extensively tested for fire performance, demonstrating superior characteristics compared to glass fiber insulation. In tests, THERMAFIBER insulation remained intact significantly longer than glass fiber, which melted or fell away.
Sound and Fire-Rated SAFB Assemblies
Various assemblies using THERMAFIBER SAFBs have been tested for acoustical performance and fire ratings, including steel stud partitions with different configurations, achieving high STC ratings and fire resistance.
Technical Data and Good Design Practices
THERMAFIBER provides detailed technical data and design practices to optimize the use of SAFBs in construction projects, ensuring maximum performance in sound attenuation and fire resistance.
Conclusion
THERMAFIBER Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets offer unmatched performance in sound and fire protection, making them a valuable choice for various building applications.

THERMAFIBER® Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB) are the best way to stop sound in wall and ceiling assemblies. The noncombustible mineral-fiber composition of this product not only gives it high sound attenuation characteristics, but also enables it to contribute to high fire ratings in many assemblies. The tests prove that THERMAFIBER SAFBs are the best performance value for multi-family residential projects, hotels and motels, offices and retail businesses. A few of the innumerable tests of assemblies utilizing THERMAFIBER SAFBs for sound and fire performance are shown on pages 5-9. For...

Fire Performance Effective performance for both high sound and fire ratings is the unique characteristic of THERMAFIBER Sound Attenuation Fire Testing Blankets. Glass fiber insulation simply doesn’t compare. Glass fiber’s lower density means lower sound performance, according to sound tests conducted by USG. Evaluations of various densities and thicknesses showed that the best acoustical performance in mid- and high-frequency sound (typical in offices and between hotel rooms) was with insulations of a nominal density of 2.5 lb./cu. ft. Densities above 2.5 lb./cu. ft. performed better at higher...
