Rattan PROCESSING & MANUFACTURING According to the Indonesian people, rattan is hugging the rainforest. This is meant both literally as rattan grows like lianas around the trees but also figuratively speaking, because the use of rattan help preserving the rainforest as there is no rattan production without the rainforest. 80% of the world’s rattan resources grow in the Indonesian rain forest. Manufacturing of rattan furniture Rattan is solid, in opposition to hollow bamboo, and is therefore bendable. When steamed for 10-15 minutes, rattan can be formed by hand using old traditional manufacturing techniques and a few simple tools. In our rattan production there is no waste, as all residues can be used as fuel for the steam ovens. Our most detailed furniture, such as the Rossini chair and Carlo bar trolley, are so advanced that only a limited number of our craftsmen are able to make these. WITH A PASSION FOR RATTAN Sika-Design is a true family company with 3rd generation, Louise Andreasen, in charge. The story of Sika-Design began in 1942 when Ankjær Andreasen produced the first batch of smaller interior items made of rush and willow, and since then the family have continued his legacy. Knud Andreasen, Ankjær Andreasen’s son, took over the company in 1983, and Ankjær continued his daily inspections until his death in 1997. Arne Jacobsen Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was revered as one of the most visionary and progressive Danish architects of his time. Arne Jacobsen was admitted to the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1924 to 1927. Still a student in 1925, he participated in the Paris Art Deco fair, Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where he won a silver medal for his first furniture design. Charlottenborg BY ARNE JACOBSEN The Charlottenborg lounge chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1936. The lounge chair was showcased for the first time at the Charlottenborg spring exhibition in 1937, and since then named after the castle. The chair was originally named A.J 237 and was part of a series of original rattan chairs. The Charlottenborg chair was one of Arne Jacobsen’s own favorite lounge chairs and part of the interior design in his famous vacation home ‘Knarken’ built in 1938. Yuzuru Yamakawa Yuzuru Yamakawa (1933-2012) was a famous Japanese designer known for his great passion for rattan. Yamakawa designed and worked with rattan for more than 40 years, and his designs are known for both their beautiful lines and their emphasis on ergonomics. Jin Kuramoto Jin Kuramoto (1976-) is a Japanese designer who graduated from Kanazawa College of Art in 1999. Despite his young age, Kuramoto has already received international recognition and numerous awards including the Red Dot Award, Good Design award and the iF Product Design Award. With an experimental approach to design, and a great respect for the unique inherent properties of each material, Kuramoto tells a story through each of his designs ranging from automobiles, eyewear and furniture.
