Optimised hospital lighting Many factors are involved in planning and designing the right lighting for a hospital. The following are always the obvious starting points: THE RIGHT LIGHT IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT LEVEL AT THE RIGHT TIME A hospital has to operate 24/7 and is therefore highly dependent on artificial lighting. Many people might assume it is difficult to achieve quality lighting that takes care of the needs of patients and staff alike while also being an energy-efficient solution. But it can be done! Over a period of many years, Riegens has gained a high level of expertise...

The energy-aware solution Great potential for savings Danish hospitals are very demanding in terms of energy. 90% of the Danish Regions’ energy expenditure goes on hospitals. Total power consumption in Danish hospitals is 525 GWh per year. Of this, 25% is estimated to go on lighting1. Danish hospitals are using 131 GWh per. year to lighting1 The potential for electricity savings2 in the public sector was assessed in 2004 to be 35% in the short term and 50% in the longer term, through to 2015. Figur 2: Distribution of electricity consumption in Danish hospitals1 In 2008, the Danish Energy...

Adopted requirements and agreements. There are already a number of circulars and agreements about reducing energy consumption. One such is energy rating. All public buildings must be energy-rated at least once every five years. The idea of the energy rating is to draw attention to possible energy savings. Energy rating comprises, on the one hand, a standardised calculation of heat and power consumption and, on the other, an energy plan containing relevant energy-efficiency measures. The Regions have a voluntary agreement with the Danish government to implement proposals for improving energy...

With regard to investing in new lighting systems, it is important to utilise a number of opportunities to obtain major savings compared to an existing lighting system. Figure 5 shows a check list of different technical options in which Riegens has a great deal of expertise. Figure 4: Opportunities to produce energy-efficient lighting Opportunity Energy consumption A maximum of 5–8 W/m2 may be used to achieve the required 200 lux (cf. DS703*) Motion detectors Detectors switch on the lights automatically when there is movement in the room. This means the light is only used when needed. It...

Lighting to support hospital staff A lighting system serves two purposes for hospital staff: it must produce enough light for visually challenging work tasks, while also creating a pleasant working environment. to administrative tasks, cleaning and transportation between wards. In addition, lighting must also create a pleasant working environment that motivates people and creates a positive atmosphere to enable staff to mobilise extra resources to treat and care for sick people. First and foremost, the lighting must support staff as they go about their tasks in a way that promotes...

Lighting for the patient We have probably all been to a hospital, either because we were ill ourselves or to visit family or friends. Most people will no doubt recognise the experience of a strange world, with the attendant feeling of disempowerment. This is particularly so when you are the patient. Here, many people often associate a visit to the hospital with a feeling of insecurity and lack of control, both physically and psychologically. Good lighting creates a pleasant atmosphere for patients and helps to reduce anxiety and stress Therefore, it is important for the lighting to create a...

New lighting at the Hospital of South West Jutland Månedlig besparelse på 100.000 KWh The Hospital of South West Jutland in Esbjerg has just replaced the light fittings in the hospital’s 13 buildings. The result is a monthly saving of 100,000 kilowatt hours, which corresponds to the electricity consumption in 250 detached houses. The hospital has replaced more than 8,000 luminaires in the 92,000 m² of buildings, which accommodate everything from operating theatres, corridors and waiting rooms to the radiology department and outpatient clinics. Also, because the luminaires can take two different types of shade, we can convert a ward into an office quickly and easily, for example,” according to Rene Knudsen, sales manager at Riegens. The energy advisors helped us to specify the solution to ensure that energy consumption was brought down as low as possible, while maintaining the same level of lighting. The solution is a benefit to the patients and employees of the hospital, to the region’s taxpayers and, last but not least, the environment Illusion Medico was developed to take either a prismatic or a double parabolic shade.
