In 1955, in a piece on the frenzy for single-use objects and packaging among baby boomers’ parents, LIFE magazine coined the phrase “throwaway living”. These items eased the burden of household chores on their consumers’ hectic lives. At the time, Earth was home to 2.5 billion people. Thirty years later, when Santa & Cole was launched in Barcelona in October 1985, this way of life KDGÀOWHUHGWKURXJKIURPFRQVXPHUJRRGVWRLQYHVWPHQW goods, and the low-priced proposals that allowed anyone a plastic and unengaged life-style had caught on a fun gimmick at the international furniture and lighting...

We are a small, independent and global publisher of long-lived products, with roots in Belloch (Barcelona). Santa & Cole was founded in 1985 by Javier Nieto Santa, Nina Masó and Gabriel Ordeig Cole. Since then, we have been editors. Editing means choosing and making public a work that is usually someone else’s, protecting its authorship and defending its virtues. We moved to Belloch in 2003 and have been living there for only a few months now without any building work. Restoring is an act of love. Time acquires dimension and presence in the face of a job well done, be it large or small, for the hardest lesson is to last. Entramos en Belloch el año 2003 y desde hace apenas unos meses lo estamos habitando sin obras. Restaurar es un acto de amor. El tiempo cobra dimensión y presencia ante el trabajo bien hecho, ya sea grande o minúsculo, pues durar es la lección difícil.

Today, Belloch is a large estate of about 200 hectares where we produce trees and ideas, where we make prototypes and discuss every material, every detail, every intention. Absent of machines. Around us, in a radius of about 150 km, we rely on many good craftsmen for the serial production of our products. 14

We owe the architectural composition and construction of the Belloch School Residence in 1965 to the talent of Manuel Baldrich. We experience it today as an outstanding work of post-war Catalan rationalism, but it was born as an educational space for more than a thousand simultaneous students, boys and girls from many different backgrounds. Nature, inside/outside, the changing lights of the seasons, transitive spaces, awareness of its polyvalent use.
