Overview: The document describes the innovative lighting project implemented at ILLUM, a prominent department store located on Stroget, Copenhagen's famous pedestrian street. The project aimed to enhance the store's exterior and interior illumination using advanced lighting technology.
Project Background: ILLUM, founded in 1891, is now owned by the Icelandic investment group I-Holdings. The management team, led by technical manager Michael Andersen, sought to create a stunning lighting display that could be used year-round, particularly for the 2006 Christmas display.

A total of 28 ChromaFlood 200s were installed above the shop windows to light up the building's older section. LIGHTING DESIGN APPLICATIONS ILLUMinatedwithChromaRange At the heart of Copenhagen City Centre, you will find the longest and most famous pedestrian street known as Stroget. With its fashionable shops, cafes and department stores this street caters to everyone, especially the younger generations who enjoy the numerous exclusive designer stores. Along Stroget you will find the large department store ILLUM. The business was founded in 1891 by A. C. Illum and continued to be run by the family until 1972. Since then it has been sold several times, but is now owned by the Icelandic investment group I-Holdings, whose clear aim is to become one of the leading department stores in Europe. In conjunction with the preparations for the 2006 Christmas display, ILLUM’s management team conceived a stunning exterior illumination concept that additionally could be used all year round. Michael Andersen, technical manager at ILLUM working together with Pulsar’s Danish distributor Highlight and locally based Megasound, set to work on how to implement such a ground breaking lighting system for ILLUM. After reviewing the numerous options it soon became clear that the Pulsar ChromaFlood 200 was the perfect fixture for the long illumination distances and therefore would be the key to the success of this project. 28 ChromaFlood 200s were positioned just over the shop windows and light up to the 3rd floor of the older part of the building. Additionally 17 compact ChromaBatten 50s powered by five X3 ChromaZones were installed on the top of the building, allowing for illumination of the smaller spires and turrets in beautiful colour. On the newer sides of the store 36 ChromaFlood100s were used to light up the 9 banners mounted vertically on the building exterior. As with all the ChromaFlood and Batten series the IP65 waterproof rating allows for outdoor and indoor installations. The final touch was given to the project by the positioning of 4 ChromaFlood 100 and 4 ChromaFlood 200 within the store’s central atrium to provide internal colouring. Michael Andersen, commented “The overall effect was outstanding and the eye catching colour changes were unique making this store a focal point to the street. ILLUM is now a beautifully lit building that is enjoyed by thousands each evening, many even stop to photograph the state-of-the-art lighting changes that dramatically encompass the building. Utilising Pulsar’s ChromaRange for this project was fundamental to its success.”
