Project Overview
Philips Lighting implemented a lighting solution at Altona Children’s Hospital in Hamburg, Germany, to create a calming and welcoming environment for critically ill children. The project aimed to avoid a typical hospital atmosphere by using energy-efficient and emotionally appealing lighting.

Design and Products
The lighting design was managed by Sabine Mai from Mailight and Marc Ewers from euroterra. Philips products used included DayZone, TurnRound, LuxSpace, SpotLED 3, iW Cove Powercore, iColor Cove Powercore, Smartform, Celino, Pacific, and Savio with Personal Light. Juliane Lokat served as the Philips lighting consultant.

Background
Altona Children’s Hospital is a leading pediatric care facility in Germany. Since April 2011, it has featured the ‘Lufthafen’ facility, which provides comprehensive care for children and young people.

Challenge
The hospital needed to create a tranquil and relaxing environment on a tight budget, as the facility is primarily funded by donations and grants. Philips was tasked with providing an efficient and sustainable lighting solution.

Solution
Philips installed 128 DayZone LED luminaires in various rooms, providing pleasant, dazzle-free lighting. LuxSpace downlights were used in bathrooms for sustainable illumination. iW Cove Powercore was used for adjustable background lighting in hallways and dining areas, while iColor Cove Powercore provided configurable colored lighting in the snooze room. The external façade was highlighted with LED lighting and recessed spotlights.

The LED lighting solution, combined with colorful furniture and walls, creates a friendly and hospitable environment, crucial for alleviating anxiety in young patients. The lighting meets medical requirements with excellent quality, color rendering, and visual comfort. It is sustainable and cost-effective due to its long lifespan and low maintenance costs.
