It’s like the story about cooking a fish. My grandmother used to enjoy telling a joke about it: “Why do you have to cut the head off a fish before you cook it ?” she used to ask her own grandmother - who replied that her mother had taught her to do it that way. In the end, it turned out that her great-grandmother had only a small pot, so she had to cut the fish’s head off to make it fit. This analogy teaches us that a lot of things only happen because circumstances have forced us to act in a certain way at some point. There was no choice.
