4 I VICTORIAN FLOOR TILES Shapes and sizes All of our geometric floor tile designs are built up from basic individual shapes - square, rectangle, diamond, triangle, octagon, hexagon and trapezium, with various shapes and sizes designed to co-ordinate with each other. There is no need to be daunted though, as in the following pages we show you how patterns and borders are made up and how many pieces are needed for a square metre/foot area or, in the case of borders, linear metre/foot.

By changing the colours, or even adding a third colour, you have a gingham or tartan effect. Scarborough pattern in Red with a border based on Carroll in Red, Brown, White and Black Straight and narrow Classic herringbone patterns are simply made from one or more rectangles, depending on the effect you want to achieve. The addition of a narrow rectangle adds decorative detail (Stornoway, see right) while changing the piece sizes and adding another colour provides a bolder design like Whitby.
