Architecture and design Space, light, aesthetics, functionality and their interplay with social dynamics – these factors form the pillars of architecture and design. It is not possible to overstate the importance of each pillar and their interconnection in the creation of a perfect space. However, there is another factor that has taken centre stage in recent years: technological evolution.

State-of-the-art technologies mean that, more than at any other time in history, architecture and design have become one. Technology is revolutionising both fields by removing mass and allowing for the creation of lightweight constructions using advanced materials such as transparent concrete and 3D printed walls, and hightech processes such as robot-welding. Design, as a now inseparable part of architecture, must reflect this progress not to become obsolete. Another feature of our times is the rise of mass production, which only increases the value of individual design pieces and the use...

The role of light in architecture and interior design Light is one of nature’s most prolific paintbrushes. It has vast visual, symbolic, emotional, and functional impact on every aspect of our lives. Without it, our sense of and interaction with the world is irrevocably diminished. The play of light and dark has long held mythical sway in our consciousness and beliefs. And light always comes out as the “good guy”, with millennia of humans building their lives around points of light ranging from the Sun to the myriad of stars in the darkest night sky. Light enables our visual perception of...

Luminaires that make spaces more than the sum of their parts SAMUEL RIHÁK The use of superior luminaires in architectural and designer settings provides more than just the most beautiful and functional lighting; it also forms an intrinsic part of the aesthetic composition of the space. Luminaire design is currently developing in two directions: the creation of “invisible light” that illuminates without being seen; and the crafting of quality value pieces that project sophistication and increase the perception of the spaces where they are used. As modern architectural design leans toward...

SAMUEL RIHÁK 1 he first step in the design process is to evaluate the T design language and functional requirements of spaces where the product will be used and to connect these with the living aspect of human interaction. This leaves us with a feeling of how the luminaire should be and helps us achieve the melding of architecture and design into a united, balanced form.

SAMUEL RIHÁK 2 To materialise our ideas, we develop visual concepts representing different impressions and approaches. Bold, minimalistic, emotional, invisible... we combine the various facets of the feeling and then play the delicate game of balancing these ideas with ways to provide ideal lighting to fulfil practical needs and create a desired atmosphere.

SAMUEL RIHÁK 3 hroughout the entire process of creation, T we intertwine the outcomes of steps one and two with the technical and performance requirements and limitations of the product and its components. How can the luminaire be made? And can it meet all or more of the demands placed upon it? All designs go through constant modification, especially at this stage.

4 Last, but by no means least, is the technical part: the art of making the idea into a product through development of the constituent parts. This is done by our dedicated and highly skilled team of optical, thermal, electronic, and mechanical designers in close collaboration with the industrial designers who envisioned the finished luminaire and those who will produce the products.
