Description: Gold Bond® Brand Gypsum Sheathing is a water-resistant board used as an underlayment for exterior wall framing. It features a treated core and water-repellent paper surfaces. The Fire-Shield (type X) variant includes additives for enhanced fire resistance.
Uses: Suitable for wood and steel stud construction, providing fire resistance, weather protection, and structural strength. Ideal for fire-rated exterior wall assemblies.
Advantages: Economical, fire-resistant, weather-protective, easy to size, and vapor permeable, allowing water vapor escape.
Specifications: Available in 1/2" and 5/8" thicknesses with square edges. Complies with ASTM C 1396. Fire ratings include one-hour and two-hour ratings for specific wall assemblies.
Installation: Fasteners should be tightly secured without cutting into the sheathing. Can be applied vertically or horizontally with specific fastener spacing. Should be covered if exposed for more than 30 days.
Limitations: Not a finished surface or nailing base. Not recommended for exterior ceilings, soffits, or sills. Should not be exposed to elements for more than 30 days without protection.
e2XP™ Extended Exposure Sheathing: Offers enhanced moisture and mold resistance, suitable for up to 12 months of weather exposure. Noncombustible and dimensionally stable, ideal for soffit and radius applications. Not intended for direct application of finishes or as a nailing base.
Recommendations: Follow manufacturer’s guidelines for installation and use. Ensure proper flashing and sealing of openings to maintain warranty validity.

Joint Treatment: Compatible with various exterior systems. Joint finishes must be compatible with the specified exterior system. For soffit and ceiling applications, embed 2" wide fiberglass mesh tape in ProForm® BRAND Sta-Smooth® Setting Compound or equivalent over all joints, apply a skim coat, prime with exterior grade primer, and finish with two coats of exterior grade paint.
Applicable Standards and References: ASTM C 1280, GYPSUM Association GA-253. Installation must follow Gypsum Association document GA-253, ASTM C 1280, or National Gypsum Co. Gypsum Construction Guide.
Fire Resistance Ratings: The 5/8" e2XP Fire-Shield Sheathing is tested in accordance with ASTM Standard E 119 and classified as Type X for use in UL Listings.
Installation Recommendations: Framing members should not vary more than 1/8" from the plane of adjacent framing. Fasteners should be flush with the panel surface and into the framing, located at least 3/8" from the ends and edges. Use appropriate fasteners for wood and steel framing. Install with end joints staggered on horizontal applications. Control joint locations should follow building design or exterior material specifications.
