Product catalog summary
Overview: The document is a technical guide for Gold Bond® brand Gypsum Sheathing, a moisture-resistant and fire-rated sheathing used in exterior construction. It is designed for use under various exterior claddings and provides specifications, applications, advantages, installation recommendations, and limitations.
Specifications: The sheathing is 5/8 inch thick with a Type X core, available in 4 ft width and lengths from 8 to 10 ft. It features a non-combustible gypsum core, moisture-resistant paper, and is designed for fire-rated assemblies. Key physical properties include a flexural strength of ≥ 147 lbf perpendicular and ≥ 46 lbf parallel, a thermal resistance of R = .56, and compliance with ASTM standards.
Applications: It is used as sheathing on wood or steel framing for fire resistance and moisture protection under claddings like wood, vinyl, fiber cement siding, masonry veneer, EIFS, and stucco. It is also suitable for fire-resistance-rated exterior wall assemblies.
Advantages: The sheathing provides fire resistance, moisture protection, and ease of installation with GridMarX® guide marks. It is dimensionally stable and resists warping and sagging.
Installation Recommendations: Install according to ASTM C1280 and GA-253 standards. Panels can be installed vertically or horizontally, with specific guidelines for gaps and fastener penetration. Special instructions are provided for different cladding types like vinyl siding, stucco, and brick veneer.
Limitations: The sheathing is not a finished surface and should not be used as a nailing base or for tile applications. It should not be applied below grade or used as a replacement for structurally engineered sheathing in shear wall designs. It must be protected from the elements and covered with a weather-resistant barrier immediately after installation.
