Overview of Special Function Films
This document details various special function films designed for glass surfaces, including low-reflection films, anti-fingerprint films, and super-hydrophilic films. These films aim to reduce glass reflections, prevent dirt and fingerprints, inhibit bacterial growth, and minimize water droplets and fogging on glass.
1. Low-Reflection Films
Purpose and Benefits
- Reduce visible light reflection on glass surfaces, significantly lowering glare and improving visibility.
- When applied on both sides of glass, reflection rates can be reduced from approximately 8% to as low as 0.4%.
- All low-reflection films maintain high transparency with visible light transmittance above 92%.
- Applications include showroom glass, display cases (e.g., insect specimens), and aquarium tanks.
Key Products and Features
| Product Code | Width (mm) | Thickness (μm) | Special Features | UV Cut | Outdoor Use | Reflection Rate (%) |
|---|
| SF-1000 / SF-1000N | 610 / 1220 | 74 | Micro-protrusion (Moth-eye structure), No.1 low reflection | Yes (99%) | No | 0.4 |
| SF-1300H | 1220 / 1500 | 75 | Wide width type | Yes (94%) | No | 0.9 |
| SF-1520HG | 1250 / 1524 | 70 | Outdoor application possible | Yes (99%) | Yes | 1.5 |
Application Note: For optimal reflection reduction, films must be applied on both sides of the glass since reflections occur at both glass boundaries. Single-sided application or application on inner layers of laminated glass reduces effectiveness.
Additional Features
- UV cut rates up to 99% protect interiors from ultraviolet rays.
- Anti-scattering properties enhance safety.
- Some products include hard coatings for scratch resistance.
2. Anti-Fingerprint Films
- Provide anti-fouling, anti-fingerprint, and antibacterial functions.
- Surface is coated with hydrophobic and oleophobic layers, making fingerprints and dirt easy to wipe off.
- Hard coat layers protect the film from scratches during cleaning and maintenance.
- High transparency ensures the film is visually unobtrusive.
- Micro-adhesive versions allow easy removal and replacement.
3. Super-Hydrophilic Films
- Reduce water droplets and fogging on glass surfaces, improving visibility in humid environments such as bathrooms and aquariums.
- Water spreads evenly on the surface instead of forming droplets, maintaining clear sightlines.
- Hard coat layers protect against scratches during cleaning.
- Micro-adhesive versions facilitate easy removal and replacement.
4. Product Specifications Summary

5. Optical and Thermal Properties
- Visible light transmittance ranges from 85% to 93%, depending on the product.
- UV transmittance is generally below 1% for most low-reflection films, except SF-3000H which has higher UV transmittance (~58%).
- Solar heat absorption ranges from 8.5% to 11%, with solar heat transmittance around 81% to 92%.
- Thermal transmittance (U-value) is approximately 6.0 to 6.1 W/m²·K.
6. Usage and Installation Guidelines
- Films without outdoor use indication are for indoor application only.
- Designed specifically for glass and mirrors; for resin substrates, a special base film (G-401) is recommended.
- Installation temperature should be between 10°C and 30°C.
- Care must be taken to avoid scratches during installation due to special coatings.
- Water or moisture used during installation may cause temporary fogging or bubbles that dissipate over time.
- Post-installation maintenance should use soft microfiber cloths and mild neutral detergents; avoid commercial cleaners or solvents.
- Masking tapes or adhesive sheets should not be applied over the films as they may damage surface functionality.
- Removal of films may leave adhesive residue depending on environment.
7. Maintenance Recommendations
- Use dedicated alkaline ionized water (product code SF-AW500) and microfiber cloths (SF-MFPSF-1000) for cleaning low-reflection films.
- Do not use commercial cleaners or solvents to avoid damaging the film surface.
- For films with seams, clean along the seam lines to prevent damage.
8. Additional Notes
- Some products incorporate Mitsubishi Chemical's "Mosmite TM" base film technology for enhanced performance.
- Anti-bacterial activity is confirmed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with values exceeding JIS Z2801 standards.
- Videos demonstrating anti-reflection, anti-fingerprint, and super-hydrophilic effects are available on the company website.
