NSF Brochure - 1

Frequently Asked Questions Q: A: Why is NSF 140 2007e certification for carpet important? The design community, building owners, and corporations now have one standard to easily identify certified carpets that have reduced environmental impact. The carpet industry, along with a multi-stakeholder group including architects, designers and government representatives, set out to provide our customers with: - A non proprietary Standard (everyone can use it for consistency and easy comparison). - Multi attribute (includes LCA among many other criteria). - Third party certification system (independent verification). - Exclusively for carpet (metrics are not diluted by other products). What is the NSF 140 2007e Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard? This Standard is the most comprehensive and rigorous benchmark in the flooring industry. Unlike most standards which are single attribute, this Standard requires superior performance in multiple environmental-attribute areas. More information about this important Standard can be found at: www.nsf.org/info/carpet. What is ANSI? The American National Standards Institute or ANSI is a non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products and services. The organization also coordinates U.S. standards with international standards so that American products can be used worldwide. This ensures that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent; that people use the same definitions and terms; and that products are tested the same way. What is hoped to be gained from NSF 140 2007e? This Standard is the first multi-attribute, non-proprietary, third party standard based on Life Cycle Assessment principles solely for carpet. It is not a single attribute standard only looking at recycled content. It is designed as a system with varying levels of certification to define more sustainable carpet products. It allows for a streamlined approach for product evaluation and hopefully will reduce the number of standards being developed, thus eliminating confusion. Do I have to be a state agency to use the Standard? No. The Standard is being adopted by various corporate customers, A&D firms AND state agencies for use in commercial carpet specifications. Additionally, if NSF 140 carpets are selected for a building and/or renovation project, it can help qualify for an innovation credit within the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED® Rating System. Earn LEED INNOVATION CREDIT With Mohawk Group Carpets The USGBC has issued a design Innovation Credit that awards one LEED® innovation point for projects that use certified Mohawk Group carpeting based on the product’s NSF 140 2007e certification. A majority of our tufted and woven nylon products qualify for NSF 140 2007e with a rating of Gold or Platinum. A wide variety of our tile, woven and broadloom products meet NSF 140 2007e certification.
