Introduction to RHEINZINK®
RHEINZINK® is a renowned brand of architectural zinc, known for its natural weathering properties and blue-gray patina. Composed of 99% high-grade zinc with titanium and copper, it is used for roofs, wall cladding, and gutters.

Composition and Properties
The alloy consists of Zinc (99.835%), Titanium (0.07 - 0.12%), and Copper (0.1 - 1.0%). Copper enhances malleability and color, while Titanium improves tensile strength and hardness. Available finishes include Pre-weathered Blue-Gray, Pre-weathered Graphite-Gray, and Bright Rolled.

Standards and Mechanical Properties
RHEINZINK® meets and exceeds Euro-Norm Standard DIN EN 988 and is quality controlled under DIN EN ISO 9001. Key mechanical properties include tensile strength, yield strength, elasticity modulus, and thermal expansion coefficient.

Environmental Benefits
RHEINZINK® is fully recyclable, with a high recycling rate and low energy production requirements, certified as environmentally friendly.

Weathering Characteristics
The patina process forms zinc carbonate, protecting the metal. The patina's color varies with environmental factors and is self-healing.

Influences from Other Building Materials
Compatible with most materials, but precautions are needed with certain metals and woods to prevent corrosion.

Corrosion and Material Compatibility
Zinc resists corrosion in alkaline, chlorine-free environments but can corrode with chlorides. Contact with cleaning solutions or mortar residue can cause defects.

Fabrication Guidelines
Standard tools for non-ferrous metals are suitable, except in cold temperatures where preheating is recommended. Adhere to minimum bending radii to avoid fractures.

Maintenance Recommendations
Use mild, non-acidic soaps and water for cleaning. Avoid abrasive tools. Heavy soiling may require Scotch Brite™ pads, but this can remove pre-weathering.

Surface Appearance and Protection
Cleaning can reveal the Bright Rolled material beneath, which will naturally weather. Regular inspections and debris removal are advised.

Transportation and Storage
Store and transport in dry, ventilated conditions. Use dry pallets and abrasion protection. Wear gloves to avoid fingerprints.

Handling and Installation
The finished side of the coil is typically the inside face exposed to weather. Remove strippable films promptly to ensure even patina development.

WHAT IS RHEINZINK®? Since 1993, RHEINZINK® has been used in North American on college and corporate campuses, libraries, cultural centers, and residential projects. RHEINZINK® is recognized as a low- environmental impact metal of choice that is both beautiful and cost-effective. Available in two titanium-zinc alloys: RHEINZINK® Pre-weathered blue-gray (PWBG) and Pre-weathered graphite-gray (PWGG). Also available in Bright Rolled (BR); mill finish: blue-gray alloy with no Pre-weathering treatment. Composition of RHEINZINK® Zinc 99.835% Titanium 0.07 - .12% Copper 0.1 - .18% (PWBG) Copper 0.08 - 1.0% (PWGG) Copper ■ Forms a solid solution with zinc ■ Improves malleability ■ Is responsible for the natural Blue-Gray and Graphite-Gray colors Titanium ■ Improves the tensile strength and hardness of the material and increases creep resistance ■ Increases the re-crystallization temperature by about 68° F (20° C) to about 572° F (300° C). Fig. 1 gutters (40 years). This engineered zinc-alloy also helps designers provide a nat-ural gray color compliment or contrast to brick, concrete/CMU, slate, stone, or wood while also achieving a long servͭice life. RHEINZINK® is a monolithic metal that is low-maintenance, malleable, and has no color coating. For almost 300 years, zinc has been used by European designers and sheet-metal craftsman to create structures that endure. RHEINZINK® is the world's leading brand of architectural-zinc for building applications. Generically known as "titanium-zinc", RHEINZINK® is a natu-ral-weathering metal that forms a blue-gray patina after repeated exposure to moisture and air. Combining 99% super high-grade zinc with approxi-mately 1% titanium and copper, the RHEINZINK® alloy can help provide long-term solutions for roofs (80 + years), wall cladding (200+ years), and RHEINZINK Coils and Sheets come in Bright Rolled, Pre-weathered Blue-Gray and Pre-weathered Graphite-Gray Gutter Systems stocked in Pre-weathered Blue-Gray, Pre-weathered Graphite-Gray and Bright Rolled by special order. WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS Patina Process Since RHEINZINK® blue-gray and graphite-gray alloys are natural metals, consisting mostly of zinc; it will weather according to its environment. When exposed to wetting and drying cycles, the surface will slowly develop a natural patina comprised of zinc carbonate. The patina is a crusty outer layer, which pro-tects the underlying alloy and ensures its long life. The resulting color is a soft, blue-gray or graphite-gray, depending on the alloy. In inland locations, the RHEINZINK® patina forms through a process whereby the zinc undergoes a two-step chemical...

WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS Fig. 3 after one hundred years of service. Both projects were renewed with RHEINZINK® material. Proper detailing, fabrication and work-manship contribute to the longevity of zinc as a building envelope material. The durability of zinc as roofing, roof drainage, and cladding material is inherent in the zinc itself and is attrib-uted to the ability of zinc to form a pro-tective patina which prevents the zinc from oxidizing. The formation of a uniform patina may occur within 6 months to 5 years depending on the aggressiveness of the environment. The composition of the...
