Product catalog summary
Introduction
Mayr-Melnhof Holz is a prominent timber industry company in Central Europe, emphasizing sustainable and ecological practices. The company provides a comprehensive value-added chain from forest management to timber engineering, focusing on quality, modernity, sustainability, and tradition.
Product Overview
The company produces various timber products, including glulam beams, Duo-/Trio beams, laminated ceiling elements, floor and wall beams, cross-laminated timber, 3-ply structural panels, formwork panels, and beams.
Properties and Applications
Glulam beams are notable for their large spans, free shapes, load-bearing capacity, and resistance to fire and chemicals. They are used in diverse building types and offer excellent thermal insulation and recyclability, aiding climate protection.
Advantages
Glulam beams are lighter than steel, allowing for large spans and free shapes. They exhibit high fire resistance and predictable burning properties without needing expensive fire protection coatings. They are also resistant to aggressive chemicals, suitable for various industrial applications.
Technical Data
Glulam beams consist of at least three lamellas glued together, with the highest stresses in the tensile and compression zones. Made from spruce or larch, they are available in various dimensions and strength classes, glued with melamine resin-based adhesive, and have a moisture content of 10-12%.
Quality and Surface Options
Available in visible and industrial quality, glulam beams have specific criteria for planing, knots, resin pockets, and other surface features. Proper storage and assembly are crucial for maintaining quality.
Specifications
Products are manufactured to precise dimensions with tolerances governed by EN 390. The reference moisture content is 12%. Dimensional tolerances for glulam include width tolerances of ±2 mm and height tolerances of +4 mm/-2 mm or +1%/-0.5% depending on the height range. Length tolerances vary with beam length, from ±2 mm for beams under 2.0 m to ±20 mm for beams over 20 m. Curved components have specific tolerances, with CNC machining allowing for exact dimensions.
Crack Formation
Shrinkage cracks may occur due to wood's natural behavior. These can be minimized by gradually adjusting timber moisture content to equilibrium through ventilation and heating. Cracks are tolerable up to a depth of 1/6 of the beam width in non-critical stress areas.
Services
Mayr-Melnhof offers technical consultation, preliminary dimensioning, structural calculations, and shop drawings. Chemical surface protection is available, with options for impregnation without biocides, with biocides, or colored stains.
Custom Joinery
Custom joinery is available in simple and complex forms, with CNC machining providing precision and efficiency. Special cross-sections can be produced from standard ones, and stock beams are available for quick delivery.
Logistics and Transport
Glulam components are packaged for protection during transport. Transport by lorry, special transport, and rail are options, with specific requirements for each method.
Certificates
Mayr-Melnhof holds various certificates ensuring product quality and compliance with environmental and quality management standards.
Special Shapes
Precambered and curved beams are available, with specific manufacturing requirements. Block gluing and finger-jointed members offer structural solutions for larger components.
CNC Machining
The Reuthe facility features advanced CNC machining centers capable of handling large components with high precision, supporting a range of machining needs.
Traditional Custom Joinery
Traditional joinery is performed on a separate gantry, handling components up to 15 meters in length with a maximum cross-section of 30/62.5 cm. This setup is suitable for end cuts, slots, drilled holes, and edge cuts, with up to 30 installed and fixed tools.
File Formats for CNC Machining
For efficient CNC machining, the document recommends providing CNC data in formats such as Cadwork 3D files, AutoCAD (*.dwg), or Hundegger files (*.bvn).
Connection Materials
Commercially available connection materials like joist hangers, brackets, and screws can be supplied and pre-mounted. Individually welded steel parts can also be pre-mounted based on the order.
Pre-assembly
Pre-assembly services are offered at the Reuthe facility, which is more cost-effective than on-site assembly and simplifies workflows.
Steel-Timber Joints
Various jointing techniques are available, including steel plate sections, welded steel sections, guide pins, dowels, self-drilling screws, and threaded rods.
Site Assembly
Site assembly is carried out by customers or specialized construction companies. Mayr-Melnhof Holz does not offer installation services but can recommend skilled companies.
CNC Machining Examples
Examples include birdsmouth notches, valley rafters, moulded rafter heads, diagonal cuts, scarf joints, and more.
Span Tables
The document includes span tables for glulam beams, providing maximum permissible spans for various widths and loads. It emphasizes that these tables are for pre-dimensioning purposes and a precise structural analysis is required.
Material Assumptions
The material properties are based on Gl 24h (bs 11) with specific modulus of elasticity and permissible stresses.
Contact Information
The document provides contact details for Mayr-Melnhof Holz locations in Austria and Germany, including phone numbers and email addresses.

Large spans With the same load-bearing capacity, glulam is lighter than steel. The high load-bearing capacity with lower dead weight allows tight dimensioning of the components. Thanks to the excellent material properties spans of up to 100 metres can be realised using the proper structural system and strength graded glulam. Even with regard to transport, timber offers significant advantages because of its low dead weight. The costs of transport and the environmental pollution are comparatively low. Free shapes Glulam can be produced as straight, pre-cambered, arched or bent members in a great...

Resistant to aggressive chemical substances Glulam is resistant to aggressive chemical substances. Therefore structures made of glulam are also suitable for buildings that are used to store materials such as fertilisers, salt or acids. Glulam beams and trusses are the preferred building material when it comes to swimming pool and wellness spa structures as they combine structural advantages with the resistance to an aggressive climate while providing an aesthetical appearance. Durable comfort Timber lends to a warm, comfortable ambience which immediately gives people a sense of well being. The...

Glulam Lay-up Glulam beams consists of at least 3 lamellas glued together with the longitudinal grain of the lamellas in parallel direction. Glulam is normally stressed in bending, so that the highest stresses arise in the tensile and compression zone. The layered construction of glulam allows lamellas to be used in the various elastomechanical zones of the beam according to their quality (strength sorting). Thus the high-quality lamellas of a bending beam are laid across the beam height in the tensile and compression zones according to the stress curve. The middle layers can have a lower lamella...

Dimensional tolerances for straight components Our engineered timber products are always produced to the precise dimension ordered. Manufacturing tolerances and the natural shrinking and swelling behaviour of timber may result in dimensional deviations of the cross-section of ± 2 mm. The dimensional tolerances for glulam are governed by EN 390. The reference moisture content is 1 2%: Dimensional tolerances for curved components Crack formation As a result of the natural tendency of the wood to shrink and swell, shrinkage cracks may occur depending on the ambient conditions. The outer layers of...
