European Championship-2

The first division club Śląsk Wrocław’s new stadium, Miejski (meaning ‘municipal stadium’) is one of Poland’s new state-of-the-art stadiums and one of Poland’s four European Championship 2012 venues. This championship is co-hosted by the Ukraine, which also provides four venues. And this stadium for 43,000 people in the city’s Fabryczna district is multi-functional to the core. An utterly compelling design and state-of-the-art technology provide the highest level of comfort and safety.

A special illumination system creates an intricate play of light onto the facade of the modern arena by night.

Its unusual roof and facade structure make Poland’s new football stadium one of the most modern in all of Europe. Design by the Düsseldorf-based architectural firm “JSK Architekten” as a classic one-tier stadium, Max Bögl built the 162mn project in only 18 months. The group successfully finished what a Polish consortium, whose contract the City of Wroclaw had terminated due to delays, had started. X-shaped struttings also serve as an interior architectural design element.

George Michael, the “Gentleman of Pop“, opened the stadium as part of his Symphonica tour. Truly a world-class event. The city initially planned to re-build its old Olympic Stadium for the European Football Championship 2012, but since it is listed as a National Monument and subject to conservation orders, Poland’s fourth largest city (630,000 people) opted for a new one. The stadium‘s impressive architecture, its spectacular roof and facade in particular, make it a cutting edge football arena and a fantastic venue for live events. The new stadium and its urbanistic environment were designed...

The “Allseater“ promises an unobstructed view at all matches and events. The new one-tier stadium has a classic design, however, the sandwiched lounge level sets it apart from others. While most stadiums’ usable floor space is found beneath the grandstand and the tiers are accessed by external staircases, here the grandstands are free-standing and the usable floor space and promenades lie outside. The plenums inside provide access via open staircases and also a view of the illuminated underside of the grandstand. Bridges connect the upper level of the grandstand with the upper promenade.

The VIP lounge provides an exclusive view of what’s going on on the pitch. A meshed membrane outer skin and an oval roof provide for a very distinct design that turns this stadium into a Wroc ław icon. All seats are roofed and provide an unobstructed view. Two continuous promenade levels create plenty of space for about 1,900 business seats, a VIP lounge, rooms for teams, as well as functionaries and media representatives. The conference rooms on the lounge level aside, there are 30 incentive boxes in the eastern and western grandstands with rows of seats in the front and an excellent view of...

The semi-transparent outer skin hides free-standing grandstands that are enclosed by lavish staircases, promenades and usable floor space. The multifunctional stadium is characterised by three basic elements. The reinforced concrete grandstands are made of precast and constructive job-mixed concrete units. The steel structure bearing the oval roof is mounted on pillars on the grandstands. The third element is the outer skin, a Teflon-coated glass-fibre skin mounted on the outer rings. The precast concrete units comprise circular and rectangular supports, three-level grandstand segments and walers...

A special lighting system can illuminate the Teflon-coated glass-fibre skin in various colours. The architectural and structural highlight is the oval roof’s filigree steel structure. It is composed of 38 radial level trusses and tangential purlins, supported by an outer elliptical chord, an edge beam that transitions to the facade. The latter consists of five elliptical ring girders, enveloping the entire stadium with a semi-transparent mesh membrane; the facade seems to hover three metres above the main promenade. The bottom and top ring girder are horizontal, while the girders in between are...

The “Battle of the XXI. Century“ between heavy-weight champion Vitali Klitschko and his challenger Tomasz Adamek sold over 44,000 tickets and was the European boxing highlight of the year. The stadium‘s two-week opening ceremony was as spectacular as its architecture is unique. At the beginning of September, Śląsk Wrocław played against its own B team. And only one week later, on September 10, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko beat his Polish challenger Tomasz Adamek there, being awarded a K.O. victory in round 10. The icing on the cake was George Michael’s Symphonica concert tour. Accompanied...
