Will the conservatory be warm enough to use daily during the winter? Definitely. In fact we have a conservatory here in our design studio that we use as a meeting room every day, all year round. It is an important part of the M&L philosophy that our buildings have a low environmental impact. This means creating well-insulated buildings that conserve energy wherever possible. We use double-glazed units of argon filled, low-emissions glass which makes it easy to keep the conservatory warm. The solid walls, framework and floor are all insulated too. Tight-fitting seals ensure that the room is draught-free. This all adds up to a building that typically requires no more heating per square metre than the house it adjoins. What type of heating should I use? > There are lots of options, and our designers advise our clients what will be most suitable. Open fires, radiators and underfloor heating can all be considered. At M&L we have our own trench underfloor heating system that is attractive, efficient, and practical for a glass building. How do I keep the building cool in summer? > We design our buildings with plenty of openable windows and large doors on hinges that fold right back allowing air to move through the building in warm weather. Thermostatically-controlled ventilators are discreetly incorporated into the roof design to allow the warm air to rise and escape. Roof blinds are a wonderful way to control the temperature in a conservatory. They soften sunlight and at the same time create a private and inviting atmosphere. M&L produce a range of hand-made blinds with manual or electric operation. If further cooling is required a fan can be included that rotates high in the glass roof creating a soft breeze. Where necessary we can also specify solar-control glass. Air-conditioning is not usually required in Britain, but when it is necessary our designers can plan to locate it discreetly. Will I be able to use my conservatory comfortably all year round? Yes. Our buildings are designed to be used daily as part of your home, no matter what the season or climate. M&L have built conservatories in extreme climates from California to Norway - a conservatory can nearly always be a practical option as long as the correct heating and cooling requirements are considered at the design stage. > marston-and-langinger.com size="-1">
