Ocean Black

Product catalog summary
Material Overview
Ocean Black is a premium metamorphic phyllite from India, characterized by its deep black color and extremely low water absorption rate of 0.09%. It is frost-resistant, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Unlike common slate, Ocean Black is in a higher metamorphic class, offering superior structure and performance.

Technical Specifications
The material exhibits high compressive strength (143 MPa dry, 138 MPa saturated) and flexural strength (48.04 MPa dry, 37.95 MPa saturated). It has a slip resistance of 56 USRV when dry and 28 USRV when saturated. The phyllite shows no visible defects after 50 freeze/thaw cycles and has a Mohs hardness of 3–4.

Available Finishes
Ocean Black is available in four finishes: Fine Rubbed (smooth and matte), Rustic (textured), Riven (natural cleft), and Jagged (antiqued effect). Each finish is tailored for specific applications, enhancing the material's versatility.

Applications
Ocean Black is suitable for a wide range of applications, including:
  • Interior flooring and cladding
  • Outdoor paving and driveways
  • Ventilated facades and roofing
  • Pools, spas, and shower trays
  • Kitchens and worktops
  • Stairs and fireplaces
Its low porosity and textured appearance make it ideal for wet areas like bathrooms and spas.

Processing and Selection
Blocks are selected at the quarry and processed into slabs, preserving the stone's color and structural integrity. This ensures a consistent and high-quality product.

Not slate: a higher-class phyllite Ocean Black is a premium metamorphic phyllite native to India, in a deep grey-black colour. The manufacturer's technical data sheet places it in a higher metamorphic class than common slate, from which it differs in structure and performance. Water absorption is extremely low — 0.09% — with an almost total absence of connected porosity. After 50 freeze/thaw cycles the data sheet records no visible defects: a behaviour that makes Ocean Black particularly reliable for outdoor use and wet areas too. AVAILABLE FINISHES Four Surfaces, One Material Each finish brings out Ocean Black's compactness in a different way, directing it toward specific applications — from walls and worktops to outdoor spaces and roofing. Fine Rubbed Smooth, matte and non-reflective — for worktops, bathrooms and surfaces in direct contact. Textured, dimpled surface, for flooring and walls with a strong material character. Natural cleft along the cleavage planes — the stone's most authentic look. Antiqued effect, soft and velvety to the touch, for a more informal character.
