European Technical Assessment

Product catalog summary
General Information
The European Technical Assessment (ETA) 11/0137, issued by the Austrian Institute of Construction Engineering (OIB), pertains to LIGNATUR-box, surface, and shell elements, which are prefabricated wood-based loadbearing stressed skin panels manufactured by Lignatur AG in Switzerland. This document replaces the previous approval valid from 2012 to 2017 and is based on the ETAG 019 guideline.
Technical Description
The LIGNATUR elements are large-size floor and roof components made from softwood, featuring parallel skins and ribs. They can be open or closed box types, with or without thermal insulation, which does not contribute to structural characteristics. The skins and ribs are bonded with adhesive, and the elements can include ballast weight for non-structural purposes.
Intended Use
These elements are designed for load-bearing or non-load-bearing applications in floors and roofs, suitable for static and quasi-static actions. They are intended for use in service classes 1 and 2 as per EN 1995-1-1, requiring protection from weather exposure.
Performance and Assessment
The product's performance is assessed based on mechanical resistance, fire safety, hygiene, and environmental impact. Essential characteristics include load-bearing capacity, fire resistance, moisture resistance, sound insulation, and thermal properties. The elements are expected to have a working life of 50 years under proper installation and maintenance.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation must be conducted by qualified personnel following the manufacturer's instructions, with an assembly plan available on-site. The elements should be protected during transport and storage, and damaged products must not be used. Maintenance is generally not required, but any necessary repairs should be assessed individually.
Components
Timber used in the elements must be strength graded and technically dried, conforming to EN 338. Adhesives must meet EN 15425 or EN 301 standards. Thermal insulation and ballast weight components must comply with relevant European standards and be CE marked.
Methods of Verification
  • General: The assessment covers mechanical resistance, stability, fire safety, hygiene, health, environmental protection, noise protection, and energy economy as per Regulation (EU) № 305/2011.
  • Identification: The product is identified based on data deposited with the Österreichisches Institut für Bautechnik. Any changes to the product or production process must be reported to the institute.
Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP)
  • System 1: The manufacturer must conduct factory production control and further testing of samples. A notified product certification body assesses the product's performance, inspects the manufacturing plant, and conducts continuous surveillance.
Technical Details for AVCP Implementation
  • Factory Production Control: The manufacturer maintains a documented system ensuring conformity with the ETA. This includes specifications of materials, structural member positions, dimensions, and installation of insulation products.
  • Declaration of Performance: The manufacturer issues this declaration once all criteria are met.
Product Specifications
  • LIGNATUR Box Element (LKE): Height ≤ 400 mm, Width ≤ 250 mm, Length ≤ 18 m.
  • LIGNATUR Surface Element (LFE): Height ≤ 320 mm or 320-480 mm, Width ≤ 1,000 mm, Length ≤ 18 m.
  • LIGNATUR Shell Element (LSE): Height ≤ 250 mm, Width ≤ 1,000 mm, Length ≤ 18 m.
Performance Characteristics
  • Load bearing capacity and serviceability are determined according to EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode 5).
  • Moisture content is verified according to EN 13183-1.
Basic Requirements for Construction Works
1. Reaction to Fire
LIGNATUR-elements without perforation for floors and roofs are classified as D-s1, d0 according to EN 13501-1. The overall thickness of load-bearing elements must be at least 120 mm, with skins and ribs in planed spruce at least 25 mm thick. Perforated elements also meet the same fire classification.
2. Resistance to Fire
The charring rate for standard elements is 0.8 mm/min as per EN 1995-1-2. For perforated elements, specific charring rates are detailed in Annex 3.
3. Water Vapour Permeability and Moisture Resistance
Softwood has a water vapour resistance factor (μ) between 20 and 50 according to EN ISO 10456. No performance is determined for water tightness as the product does not include external finishes.
4. Release of Dangerous Substances
Formaldehyde emissions are classified as E1 according to EN 717-1. No other dangerous substances are identified as per ETAG 019.
5. Sound Insulation
Airborne and impact sound insulation performance is detailed in Annex 4, with specific examples of LIGNATUR-elements provided.
6. Thermal Resistance
Thermal conductivity for spruce wood is 0.13 W/(m·K) as per EN ISO 10456. The characteristic density is 350 kg/m³, and heat capacity is 1600 J/(kg·K).
7. Fire Resistance - Joints
Joints between LIGNATUR-elements for fire resistance classes REI30, REI60, and REI90 are specified with appropriate joint widths and insulation requirements.
8. Sound Absorption
Perforated skins for acoustic elements are detailed in Annex 5, with various types and their sound absorption coefficients (αw) provided.
Sound Absorption Specifications
- Acoustics Type 9.1, Class of Absorber: D
- Slot Dimension: 5.5 / 380 mm
- Grid: 24 / 600 mm
- Sound Absorption Coefficient (αw): 0.50
