Hydraulic Separators

Hydraulic Separators

Product catalog summary
Specifications:
The Laars Hydraulic Separators are designed to operate at 125 psi, with an optional upgrade to 150 psi. Standard sizes range from 120 to 860 gallons, with larger custom sizes available. The separators are bare tanks with a 5-year warranty and feature a 4-inch base ring. They are jacketed and insulated with an R-16 topcoat.
Functionality:
The Hydraulic Separator is engineered to reduce short cycling in boiler systems and to separate building and boiler circulation. It uses stored boiler water to buffer the system load, allowing the boiler to rest when the building demand is low. The separator enables independent circulation by decoupling the building and boiler loops.
Operation:
When the building's hydronic system demands heat, circulation pumps draw from the separator until the temperature drops enough to activate the boiler. Both boiler and building circulation pumps then operate, allowing direct flow through the tank. Once the building demand is met, the boiler continues to circulate until the tank reaches its operating temperature.
Sizing Requirements:
To size the Hydraulic Separator, four variables are needed: minimum boiler run time, minimum BTU output, minimum system heat load, and tank delta T for allowable temperature rise. The formula for tank volume is V = T * (MBO - MHL) / (Delta T * 500).
Model Specifications:
The document lists various models with their nominal and actual gallon capacities, dimensions, and NPT/Flange specifications.
Contact Information:
Headquarters are located in Rochester, NH, with contact numbers for sales, service, and applications engineering. International sales are handled through an office in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Hydraulic Separators-2

Supply The Laars Hydraulic Separator is designed to help reduce short cycling of a boiler system and separate building and boiler circulation. The Hydraulic Separator uses stored boiler water to buer the system load when the boiler is producing more BTU’s than what the building can handle. When the building has a minimal demand, it pulls from the tank allowing the boiler to “rest”. The Hydraulic Separator is piped so the building ow is separate from the boiler ow, allowing independent circulation. From Boiler Return To Boiler Circulation from building The Hydraulic Separator acts as a decoupler...

Hydraulic Separators-3

To properly size the capacity of the Hydraulic Separator, 4 variables are needed: 1. The minimum “run time” of the boiler. Check with your boiler equipment manufacturer for their recommended minimum run time. 2. The minimum BTU output (BTU/hr). The minimum BTU output is based on the boiler output at the minimum ring rate, if equipped with a variable input system that modulates the ring rate down as the demand decreases. 3. The minimum system (heat) load (BTU/hr). Based on the smallest zone calling for heat. 4. Tank delta T for allowable temperature rise. For hydronic heating systems typically...
