The industry standard test for acoustic fabric is the STM C423, which provides a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating indicating the percentage of sound absorbed by the fabric.

Specifications
An NRC of 0.10 signifies that 10% of sound is absorbed, while 90% passes through the fabric. Fabrics with tight construction, hard surfaces, and heavy backing are not recommended for acoustic use as they may distort sound.

Sound Absorption Fabrics
These fabrics are ideal for solid walls or areas where sound absorption is needed. They are characterized by excellent absorption values, surface texture, soft surfaces, and thick construction or backing. Examples include Adaptation, Bauhaus Block, and Ultrasuede.

Sound Transparent Fabrics
These fabrics are suitable for wrapped applications on acoustic panels, allowing sound to pass through and be absorbed by a substrate. They feature an open weave, flat surface, and lightweight, thin construction. Examples include Allegory, Analogy, and Backdrop.
