Product catalog summary
General Information
KME Germany GmbH & Co. KG has issued an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for TECU®-Eco copper sheets and strips, including TECU® Classic Eco, TECU® Oxid Eco, and TECU® Patina Eco. The declaration is valid from December 14, 2012, to December 13, 2017, with a renewal process extending to December 13, 2018. The EPD is verified by the Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU) and follows ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards.
Product Description and Application
TECU® copper consists of 100% Cu-DHP, a high-purity, oxygen-free, phosphorus-deoxidised copper. It is available in three surface treatments: Classic, Oxid, and Patina. These products are used in roofing, wall cladding, and drainage systems.
Technical Data
Key properties include a thermal expansion coefficient of 0.017 x 10-6K-1, tensile strength of 240-285 N/mm2, and a melting point of 1083°C. The copper has a density of 8.93 kg/m3 and high thermal and electrical conductivity.
Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing involves 12 steps, including pouring, heating, hot-rolling, milling, cold roughing, annealing, finish rolling, and packaging. Environmental measures ensure air purification, water recycling, and noise control.
Environmental and Health Considerations
TECU® products are non-combustible and comply with DIN 4102, Part 1. They are UV-resistant, non-corrosive, and have a lifespan exceeding 250 years. The recycling process is efficient, with nearly 100% of copper waste being reused.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The LCA covers cradle-to-gate processes, including resource provision, transport, production, and recycling. The GaBi 5 software was used for modeling, ensuring high data quality and relevance.
Recycling and Disposal
TECU® copper is highly recyclable, with energy savings of 80-92% compared to primary production. Packaging materials are also recyclable, and a deposit system is in place for pallets.
Introduction
This document provides a detailed analysis of the ecological value and life cycle assessment (LCA) of TECU®-Eco copper sheets and strips produced by KME Germany GmbH & Co. KG. It focuses on the environmental impact, resource use, and recycling potential of these products.
Ecological Value and Recycling
The document discusses the ecological benefits of recycling copper, emphasizing a high collection rate of 99% to avoid the environmental burdens associated with primary copper production. However, a 1% loss rate in scrap leads to a deficit, necessitating the addition of primary material, which contributes to environmental burdens in Module D.
Comparability
Comparisons of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data are valid only if datasets are created according to FprEN 15804 standards, considering the building context and product-specific performance characteristics.
LCA Scenarios and Technical Information
The document outlines scenarios for the life cycle assessment, including transport to the construction site, installation, use, and end-of-life recycling potential. The recycling potential assumes a 99% collection rate, with credits calculated based on primary copper-cathode production.
LCA Results
The LCA results are presented for three types of copper sheets: TECU® Classic Eco, TECU® Oxid Eco, and TECU® Patina Eco. The results include environmental impact assessments, resource use, and waste categories. Key parameters such as Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), and Acidification Potential (AP) are analyzed.
Interpretation
The interpretation section highlights the significant impact of energy generation on various environmental categories. The need for primary material due to scrap loss in the end-of-life phase is a notable burden. The production processes and energy generation significantly influence GWP, ODP, and other impact categories.
Requisite Evidence
A calculation model for copper elutriation is developed based on laboratory data, considering factors like SO2 concentration and precipitation.
References
The document references various standards and guidelines, including DIN EN ISO standards and GaBi 5 software documentation, to support the LCA and environmental assessments.

2.6 Base materials / Ancillary materials The material TECU® copper consists of 100 % Cu-DHP according to DIN En 1172, i.e. oxygen-free phosphorus de-oxidised copper with limited residual phospho-rus. The degree of purity is at least 99.90 % copper. Only internal and external scrap is used in production. Primary copper cathode is not used. Additives: Rolling oil-emulsion: 0.544 g/kg Cu is a highly refined mineral oil containing organic esters, polyhydrocarbons, and antioxidants which is used for cooling and lubrication during the rolling process. The rolling oil emulsion is biodegradable. Benzotriazole:...

tion 2.6. The changes in colour of the surface are caused by: Further weathering causes the oxide layer to gradually grow; the thicker and denser it gets, the slower this growth becomes. Green Patina: the building geometry and the local climate can cause the formation of the green patina that is typical for copper. If TECU® products with a pre-oxidised or pre-patinated surface (TECU® Oxide, TECU® Patina) are subjected to weathering; copper compounds also form in the above-described manner. 2.12 Environment and health during use There will be no affects to health if the TECU® Eco products are...

LCA: Interpretation The Ozon Depletion Potential (ODP) is mostly influenced by the generation of electricity and the provision of charcoal. In the production process, the main contributer to the Eutrophication Potential (EP), is the gernation of thermal and electrical energy. Acidifiation Potential (AP) and the Photochemical Ozone Creating Potential (POCP) are also mainly dominated by the generation of electricity. Transports for the TECU® Eco products, in the case of POCP, have a positive effect. The reason is, that the Nitrogenmonoxide-Emissions that occure during transportation, have a negative...
