Product catalog summary
Introduction
This document provides comprehensive information on fuel/oil separators, detailing their standards, types, and applications. It emphasizes the role of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in managing surface water disposal and includes guidance from environmental regulators.
Separator Standards and Types
The document references British and European standards (EN 858-1 and 858-2) for oil separators, crucial for preventing pollution from oil leaks and spills. Two classes of separators are defined:
  • Class I: Achieves oil concentration of less than 5mg/l, suitable for removing small oil droplets.
  • Class II: Achieves oil concentration of less than 100mg/l, suitable for lower quality requirements.
Both classes can be full retention or bypass separators.
Types of Separators
  • Full Retention Separators: Treat the full flow from the drainage system, suitable for high-risk areas.
  • Bypass Separators: Treat flows from rainfall rates up to 6.5mm/hr, allowing higher flows to bypass.
  • Forecourt Separators: Designed for petrol stations to handle maximum spillages.
Selection and Application
The document provides a chart for selecting the appropriate separator based on site-specific risks and requirements, emphasizing professional consultation and adherence to environmental guidelines.
Technical Specifications
Specifications for various separator models include flow rates, storage capacities, and dimensions. The importance of selecting the correct size and type based on site conditions and regulatory requirements is highlighted.
Conclusion
Proper selection and installation of oil separators are crucial for environmental protection. The document encourages consultation with specialists and adherence to guidelines for effective pollution control.
Application
The document outlines the use of car wash silt traps and forecourt separators designed to remove silt and intercept hydrocarbon pollutants, crucial for preventing environmental contamination.
Features
The car wash silt trap is light, easy to install, and allows maintenance from ground level. It includes silt storage volume, fitted inlet/outlet connectors, vent points, and extension access shafts. The forecourt separator includes an oil storage volume, coalescer (Class I unit only), automatic closure device, and an oil alarm system.
Specifications
Detailed specifications for different separator classes include dimensions, capacity, and installation requirements, emphasizing compliance with British European Standard EN 858-1 and Environment Agency Pollution Prevention Guideline PPG3.
Installation
Guidelines suggest placing the unit on a concrete base slab with a concrete backfill. For trafficked areas, a suitable cover slab is necessary, and installation should comply with Health and Safety Guidance Note HS(G)41.
Commercial Wastewater Solutions
The document lists various wastewater treatment systems offered by Klargester, highlighting the importance of professional installation and maintenance for optimal performance.
Care & Maintenance
Kingspan Environmental Services provides maintenance services with factory-trained engineers available for site visits, offering planned maintenance contracts or one-off call-outs to ensure product longevity and efficiency.

[email protected] to make the right decision or call 028 302 66799 Surface water drains normally discharge to a watercourse or indirectly into underground waters (groundwater) via a soakaway. Contamination of surface water by oil, chemicals or suspended solids can cause these discharges to have a serious impact on the receiving water. The standard refers to two ‘classes’ of separator, based on performance under standard test conditions. Bypass separators fully...

Is there risk of oil contaminating the drainage from the site? Risk of infrequent light contamination and potential for small spills only, e.g. car park Risk of regular contamination of surface water run off with oil and/or risk of larger spills, e.g. vehicle maintenance area, goods vehicle parking or vehicle manoevering5 Drainage will also contain dissolved oils, detergents or degreasers such as vehicle wash water and trade effluents, e.g. industrial sites Fuel oils are delivered to and dispensed on site, e.g. retail forecourts Very low risk of oil contamination, e.g. roof water Source control...

Bypass APPLICATION Bypass separators are used when it is considered an acceptable risk not to provide full treatment, for very high flows, and are used, for example, where the risk of a large spillage and heavy rainfall occurring at the same time is small, e.g. I Lightly contaminated commercial areas. Class II separators are designed to achieve a concentration of 100mg/litre of oil under standard test conditions. PERFORMANCE Klargester were one of the first UK manufacturers to have separators tested to EN 858-1. Klargester have now added the NSB bypass range to their portfolio of certified and...

Full Retention Kingspan Klai Full retention separators are used in high risk spillage areas such as: ■ Fuel distribution depots. Klargester were the first UK manufacturer to have the required range (3-30 l/sec) certified to EN 858-1 in the UK. The NSF number denotes the flow at which the separator operates. The British Standards Institute (BSI) have witnessed the performance tests of the required range of separators and have certified their performance, in relation to their flow and process performance to ensure that they met the effluent quality requirements of EN 858-1. Larger separator designs...

Washdown & Silt This unit can be used in areas such as car wash and other cleaning facilities that discharge directly into a foul drain, which feeds to a municipal treatment facility. If emulsifiers are present the discharge must not be allowed to enter an NS Class I or Class II unit. ■ Tool hire depots. ■ Construction compounds cleansing points. Such wash down facilities must not be allowed to discharge directly into surface water but must be directed to a foul connection leading to a municipal treatment works as they utilise emulsifiers, soaps and detergents, which can dissolve and disperse...

Forecourt APPLICATION The forecourt separator is designed for installation in petrol filling station forecourts and similar applications. The function of the separator is to intercept hydrocarbon pollutants such as petroleum and oil and prevent their entry to the drainage system, thus protecting the environment against hydrocarbon contaminated surface water run-off and gross spillage. The unit should be installed on a suitable concrete base slab and surrounded with a concrete backfill. Structural grade units can also be supplied suitable for installation within a granular backfill (i.e. pea gravel)....
