MAINTENANCE OF NATURE OILED FLOORS (DOMESTIC USE) - 1

Karelia MAINTENANCE OF NATURE OILED FLOORS (DOMESTIC USE) POST-INSTALLATION MAINTENANCE Karelias nature oil finished floors should be given a supplementary surface treatment with Kahrs Satin Oil. The main reason for this is to prevent water penetrating the joints between boards through capillary action. For further instructions, see section Oil Surface Reconditioning. Note! UV radiation from the sun alters wood colour over time. Variations in colour - such as carpet outlines - will even out in time as they are exposed to daylight. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING Place suitable mats on both sides of the front door and beneath the coat rack to prevent sand and water from getting into the rooms. Remove abrasive dirt immediately. Protect the floor by applying felt pads under furniture legs etc. When moving furniture such as refrigerators or freezers, cover the floor with, for instance, mats in order to prevent scratches and dents. Office chairs equipped with casters require a mat or a plastic plate designed for the purpose underneath in order to prevent abrasion damage to your wooden floor. Use as little water as possible when cleaning (almost dry wipe). If visible moisture does not evaporate within a minute, you are using too much water. Immediately wipe away spilled water from the floor. Remove stains when they are fresh, either with water or a mild cleaner and dry the floor. Avoid scrubbing with hard cleaning implements. For daily maintenance, it is enough to vacuum the floor or wipe it with an almost dry mop. Thus the floor surface will dry immediately without visible drop stains appearing. Spills and ingrained dirt is removed using a mop and Kahrs Cleaner or Kahrs Spray Cleaner. Follow the instruction on the packages, too large amount of concentrate may cause the floor to get dirty more quickly as concentrate layers gather on top of one another. STAIN REMOVAL OIL SURFACE RECONDITIONING How often the floor needs maintaining with oil depends on use, cleaning, exposure to sun light etc. In private areas, this is needed approximately once a year. 1. Vacuum clean the floor carefully. 2. Clean the floor using Kahrs Cleaner and micro mop. Follow the Kahrs Cleaner instructions. Only damp cleaning, the surface should be dry again within a minute. For very dirty floors replace the micro mop using a rough brush. 3. Remove cleaner and dirt using a wrung out cloth. 4. Dry the surface using a dry cloth and leave the floor to dry for 30 minutes. For very dirty floors or on floors with heavy textures, it might be necessary to repeat step 2-4.

5. Apply a thin layer of Kährs Satin Oil on the surface and spread it evenly with a Kährs micro mop or a dry cloth by scrubbing along the texture. Polish again with a new micro mop after 10–15 minutes so that no sticky parts are left. Please observe that two layers of thin oil gives a better result than one thick layer. Applying a too high amount of oil will result in a sticky surface. MORE SEVERE DAMAGES If the floor is heavily worn, or needs renovation for some other reason, it can be machine sanded to bare wood and have a new surface treatment applied. For a new oiled surface, please...
