Product catalog summary
Product Overview
HardieWrap™ Weather Barrier is a non-woven, non-perforated polyolefin water-resistive barrier designed to protect homes from moisture and air intrusion. It is manufactured by James Hardie Building Products and complies with AC38 standards. The product is intended to balance water resistance and breathability, and it is recommended to be used with HardieWrap™ Pro Flashing and Seam Tape for a complete solution.
Specifications
HardieWrap™ Pro Flashing is a peel-and-stick product with no asphalt, VOCs, or solvents. HardieWrap™ Flex Flashing is stretchable and designed to seal around custom shapes. Both products should be stored in original sealed packaging at temperatures between 5° - 32°C (41° - 90°F) and covered within 180 days of installation.
Installation Procedures
  • Weather Barrier Installation: Install before windows and doors, ensuring the sheathing is not saturated. Overlap by 6 inches and tape seams. Fasten every 18 inches using staples or roofing nails. Extend the barrier over the sill plate by at least 1 inch.
  • Flashing Installation: Use an inverted "Y" cut for window and door openings. Apply Flex Flashing over the water-resistive barrier around window openings. Ensure all penetrations are taped to prevent water and air infiltration.
  • Sill Flashing: Cut HardieWrap™ Flex Flashing at least 12" longer than the rough opening width. Install by centering on the sill framing stud and adhering into the rough opening. Extend the back edge to the inside edge of the sill framing stud and at least 6" up each jamb framing stud.
  • Head Flashing: For circular windows, measure the circular portion and add 12". Cut HardieWrap™ Flex Flashing to this length, remove release paper, and conform to the window. Use Seam Tape or mechanical fasteners to hold the top edge temporarily.
  • Window Installation: Apply a continuous bead of sealant to the window’s mounting flange or the rough opening. Install the window according to the manufacturer’s procedures.
  • Side Jamb Flashing: Apply HardieWrap™ Pro Flashing along the vertical sides, extending beyond the sill and head flashings by at least 3".
General Requirements
The weather barrier should be installed on vertical wall applications only and must be covered within 180 days of installation. It should not be installed on saturated sheathing and is not suitable for walking surfaces. The installation must consider moisture management for both interior and exterior environments, especially in areas prone to wind-driven rain.
Repair and Maintenance
For minor punctures, use HardieWrap Seam Tape. For larger holes, use a slit-flashing technique. Ensure all repairs are sealed properly to maintain barrier integrity.
Storage and Handling
Store in a covered area away from direct sunlight and building site chemicals. Follow all safety and handling guidelines to prevent damage and ensure effective installation.
Standards and Recommendations
Follow local building codes and manufacturer’s installation instructions. For surface-mounted windows, refer to ASTM E2112-01 or AAMA 2400-2 (CAWM 400-95). Consult with architects or specifiers for moisture management in wall construction.
Important Notes
Failure to follow installation instructions and local building codes may lead to personal injury, affect performance, and void the warranty. Ensure proper installation to manage moisture effectively, especially in buildings with high wind-driven rain penetration risk. Use a spray adhesive like Nashua 357 for additional adhesion on surfaces like Oriented Strand Board (OSB).
