Product catalog summary
Product Description:
HardieTrim® boards are decorative, non-load bearing trim products used for various architectural details. They come in three thicknesses (5/4, 4/4, and 7/16 inch) and lengths of 10 to 12 feet, with widths from 4 to 12 inches. They can be finished with PrimePlus® primer or ColorPlus® Technology for a durable finish.
Installation Guidelines:
Pre-assembled corners are recommended for 5/4 boards. Use 2-inch, 16-gauge finish nails, keeping nails at least 1 inch from ends and 3/4 inch from edges. Weather cuts should be at least 22.5° and sloped downward. Ensure proper flashing and maintain a 1/4-inch gap between flashing and siding for band boards.
Fastening Specifications:
Use stainless steel finish nails. For 4-inch and 6-inch boards, use two fasteners every 16 inches; for 8-inch boards, use three fasteners; and for 12-inch boards, use four fasteners. Nails should be spaced no greater than 16 inches apart.
Window and Door Trim:
Install using the "cap over" method with proper flashing. A shim strip may be used to ensure the trim sits flat and parallel with the wall.
Additional Installation Notes:
For fascia and rake board applications, nail over a wood or steel subfascia. Use weather/bevel cuts for longer fascia runs and install a drip edge to protect the fascia board.
Specifications:
HardieTrim Battens are used with HardiePanel vertical siding for a board and batten look. They must be attached to wood or steel backing using approved fasteners. Stainless steel finish nails are recommended.
Installation Procedures:
1. Install battens vertically and parallel using chalk lines or a level.
2. Position fasteners no closer than 3/4” from edges and 1” from ends, with a maximum spacing of 16” on center.
3. Create a weather-cut of at least 22.5° angle for horizontal joints.
4. Use a horizontal band board if installing battens over horizontal panel joints.
General Requirements:
A water-resistive barrier is required. Flashing is necessary over horizontal protruding and exposed trim. Maintain clearances between Hardie products and other structures.
Safety and Handling:
Avoid breathing silica dust by working in well-ventilated areas and using appropriate cutting tools and protective equipment. Store products flat, dry, and covered before installation.
Fastening Requirements:
Use corrosion-resistant, galvanized, or stainless steel fasteners. Drive fasteners perpendicular to siding and framing, ensuring heads fit snugly against siding.
Painting and Caulking:
Use 100% acrylic topcoats and paint within specified timeframes. Use elastomeric or latex joint sealants as per manufacturer instructions.
Warnings:
Avoid bridging floors with HardieTrim Battens and/or HardiePanel Siding. Follow all safety guidelines to prevent exposure to silica dust.
General Fastening Requirements:
Pneumatic fastening is recommended. Set air pressure to ensure fasteners are driven snugly with the siding surface. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners, preferably stainless steel near water bodies.
ColorPlus® Technology Caulking, Touch-Up & Laminate:
Touch up minor damages with ColorPlus® Technology applicators. Caulk non-factory cut edges and use edge coaters for other edges.
Painting James Hardie® Products:
Ensure surfaces are clean and dry before repainting. Use 100% acrylic topcoats and avoid stains or oil-based paints.
Installation Requirements:
Use finish nails for HardieTrim Battens. Ensure adequate fastening and follow clearance details as per local building codes.
Cutting Instructions:
To minimize silica dust exposure, use outdoor cutting stations with dust-reducing tools and HEPA vacuums.
Storage & Handling:
Store products flat, dry, and covered. Avoid installing wet or saturated siding to prevent shrinkage.
Clearance and Flashing Requirements:
Maintain specified clearances between siding and other structures. Use flashing over horizontal protrusions and ensure proper drainage away from the building.
Recognition:
HardieTrim® Battens are recognized as an alternative to conventional trim in various building codes.
Specifications and Procedures:
Maintain a minimum clearance of 1-2 inches between trim products and decks, paths, steps, and driveways. Use step flashing for roof intersections with sidewalls.
Trim Application:
Use weather cuts sloped away from the wall for corners or vertical trim. Trim openings for windows and doors before siding installation.
Fastening and Painting:
Use corrosion-resistant fasteners. Paint within 180 days for primed products and 90 days for unprimed.
Caulking and Touch-Up:
Use elastomeric or latex joint sealants complying with ASTM standards. For ColorPlus® Technology products, ensure surfaces are clean and dry before repainting.
Recognition and Compliance:
HardieTrim boards are recognized as an alternative to conventional trim in various building codes.
