Product catalog summary
Product Description: HardieShingle® siding is a fiber-cement shingle siding designed for sidewall applications. It comes in straight-edge, staggered-edge panels, and decorative half-round shingles. Panels measure 48 inches by 16 inches, with individual shingles available in widths of 6, 8, and 12 inches. The product features ColorPlus® Technology, offering a factory-applied, oven-baked finish.
General Installation Requirements: Installation requires a starter strip and course, with shingles spaced no more than 1/4 inch apart. Stainless steel fasteners are recommended, and nails should be positioned 1/2 to 1 inch from the side edges of the shingles. Panels should be installed over a minimum 7/16-inch thick OSB rated sheathing.
Fastener Specifications: Use corrosion-resistant siding nails, with specific nail sizes and placements for different shingle widths. Fasteners should be driven into framing wherever possible, avoiding over-driving nails, especially over foam insulation.
Decorative Shingle Panels: Half-round shingles are used for decorative purposes, particularly in gables. Installation involves centering the first course and ensuring keyways align correctly, with special care for symmetrical installations.
General Requirements: HardieShingle® panels can be installed over wood or steel studs or directly to sheathing. A water-resistive barrier is required, and clearances must be maintained between siding and other surfaces. James Hardie products should not be stained and must not remain in contact with standing water.
Safety Warning: The product contains respirable crystalline silica, posing health risks. Proper ventilation, protective equipment, and dust control measures are essential during installation.
Storage and Handling: Store siding products flat, dry, and covered before installation to prevent damage. Avoid installing wet or saturated siding to prevent shrinkage at butt joints. Handle planks on edge and protect edges and corners from breakage.
Cutting Instructions: Position cutting stations outdoors with wind blowing dust away. Use score and snap or shears for best results. Indoors, only use score and snap or shears. Never use power saws indoors or non-HardieBlade saw blades. Use wet suppression or HEPA vacuum to manage dust.
Installation Guidelines: Follow local building codes and James Hardie instructions to avoid personal injury and voiding warranties. Use the correct HardieZone instructions for your location.
Fastener Requirements: Use corrosion-resistant, galvanized, or stainless steel fasteners. Pneumatic fastening is recommended. Ensure fasteners are driven snug against siding without over-driving.
Panel Installation: For staggered edge, half-round, and straight edge panels, follow specific steps for trimming, securing, and aligning panels. Maintain gaps for caulking where necessary and ensure proper overlap and alignment to prevent pattern repetition.
Windows and Doors: Install wall components like windows and doors according to manufacturer instructions and local codes. Continue siding application as if the wall is complete.
Caulking and Priming: Do not use stain on James Hardie products. Paint primed products within 180 days. Follow specific caulking guidelines for different panel types.
Recognition and Compliance: HardieShingle panels are recognized as suitable alternatives in various building codes and jurisdictions. Consult specific reports for additional application suitability.
Specifications and Recommendations:
  • Unprimed HardieShingle® Siding should be painted within 90 days. Non-ColorPlus® versions require a field-applied prime coat.
  • Use 100% acrylic primers and topcoats. Avoid painting when the surface is wet.
  • Refer to paint manufacturers' specifications for application rates. Back rolling is recommended when paint is spray applied.
Touch-Up and Maintenance:
  • Use the ColorPlus® Technology touch-up applicator for nicks, scrapes, and nail heads. Use touch-up paint sparingly.
  • For large damaged areas, replace with new siding with ColorPlus Technology.
  • Remove laminate sheet immediately after installation of each course.
  • Terminate non-factory cut edges into trim and caulk. Use color-matched caulks available from your ColorPlus® product dealer.
  • Treat other non-factory cut edges with ColorPlus Technology edge coaters.
Caulking and Sealant:
  • Use Elastomeric Joint Sealant complying with ASTM C920 Grade NS, Class 25 or higher, or a Latex Joint Sealant complying with ASTM C834.
  • Apply caulking/sealant according to the manufacturer's instructions or ASTM C1193.
Painting Guidelines for ColorPlus® Technology:
  • Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dust, dirt, or mildew before repainting.
  • Repriming is generally not necessary.
  • Use 100% acrylic topcoats. Avoid stain or oil/alkyd base paints.
  • Apply finish coat according to paint manufacturers' instructions regarding coverage, application methods, and temperature.

88 Like conventional wood-shingle siding, HardieShingle® siding requires the use of a starter strip and a starter course before installing the first full course of shingle panels or individual shingles. The starter strip sets the initial shingles at the proper angle and the starter course provides solid backing and keyway coverage for the first shingle course. 1) The starter strip should be installed over the water-resistive barrier. Starter strips can be made by ripping 11/4-in. lengths from full or partial planks of HardiePlank® siding. 2) Use HardiePlank 81/4-in. or 91/4-in. lap siding for...

89 For HardieShingle® panels start at one end and work across the wall. 1) Measure and trim the first panel to make sure the end of the panel falls over framing. 2) Using the chalk line as a guide along the panel top edge, carefully position the panels and secure with suitable fasteners and spacing for your particular application as noted in the NER-405. 3) Align the bottom edges of the trim and the siding for the best appearance. Where the panel begins at a corner board or at door or window casings, cut the upper portion of the panel back even with the edge of the keyway. 4) Where the siding...
