Product catalog summary
Introduction
This manual is designed to guide end users and service technicians in the installation and maintenance of the GEM-MFI Series ice machines by Ice-O-Matic. It is essential to thoroughly read and understand the manual before performing any tasks related to installation, start-up, or maintenance. For unresolved issues, contact Ice-O-Matic's Technical Service Department.
Freight Claim Procedure
Inspect merchandise upon receipt for any visible or hidden damage. Note any damage on the freight bill and file a claim with the carrier. Do not return damaged goods to Ice-O-Matic.
Warranty
Ice-O-Matic offers a limited warranty covering parts and labor for various components, with specific periods for different parts like compressors and evaporator plates. The warranty is valid only if installation and maintenance are conducted by authorized personnel.
Installation Guidelines
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. Key guidelines include maintaining ambient temperatures between 50°F and 100°F, water supply temperatures between 40°F and 100°F, and pressure between 20 psi and 80 psi. Ensure proper drainage, avoid flexible tubing, maintain a 6-inch clearance for air circulation, and ensure the machine is level.
Bin and Dispenser Applications
The GEM-MFI Series is compatible with specific Ice-O-Matic bins and dispensers. Proper kits are required for dispenser applications, and the MFI Series is not approved for such use.
Electrical Specifications
Connect the machine to a dedicated circuit with the correct voltage and circuit breaker size as indicated on the serial plate.
Start-Up and Maintenance
Follow start-up procedures and perform regular sanitizing and cleaning to maintain efficiency and hygiene. Keep a detailed service history for reference.
Specifications
The document details specifications for various models, including dimensions, electrical requirements, condenser types, and refrigerant charge. Models are categorized by condenser type: air, water, or remote.
Installation Procedures
  • Location: Install ice machines indoors with adequate space for service access and air circulation, especially for air-cooled models requiring a 6-inch clearance at the back.
  • Storage Bin: Follow instructions for installing the storage bin, including removing packaging, installing legs, and ensuring proper positioning.
  • Ice Machine: Use a mechanical lift for installation on top of the bin, secure the machine, and ensure the bin door is stable when opened.
Water and Drainage Recommendations
  • Water Quality: Emphasizes water purity and recommends consulting a water treatment specialist.
  • RO Water Limitations: Water conductivity must be at least 35 microSiemens/cm.
  • Drains: Provides specific instructions for different models, including gravity drain requirements and venting recommendations.
Remote Condenser Installation
  • Location Limits: Specifies maximum rise, drop, and line set lengths for remote condenser placement.
  • Roof Attachment: Guidelines for securing the condenser to the roof and connecting it electrically to the ice machine.
  • Line Set Routing: Instructions for routing precharged refrigerant lines, avoiding kinks, and ensuring proper sealing.
Electrical Connections
  • Ice machines require a dedicated electrical circuit with proper grounding. All wiring must comply with national and local codes, and a licensed electrician is recommended for installation.
  • Remote condenser fan motors have separate wiring requirements, including interconnecting wires between the condenser and the ice machine.
Safety and Compliance
Ice-O-Matic machines meet UL, NSF, and CUL standards. The company disclaims liability for altered products or unauthorized components.
Specifications and Installation Requirements
All outdoor wiring must be in rainproof conduit and conform to national, state, and local electrical codes. A licensed electrician is required for installation. The remote condenser should ideally be placed above the ice machine, but other locations are permissible.
Final Check List for Installation
  • Ensure the ice machine is installed indoors with controlled air and water temperatures.
  • Verify electrical service disconnect is within sight and voltage matches nameplate requirements.
  • Check plumbing connections for leaks and ensure the machine and storage bin are level.
  • Maintain a minimum of 6 inches clearance for service access and air circulation.
  • Ensure water pressure is at least 20 psig and a water shut-off valve is installed nearby.
Start-Up Procedures
  • Conduct a pre-start inspection by removing service panels and checking for loose components.
  • Open the hand valve to fill the water reservoir and check for leaks.
  • Switch the master switch ON for automatic start-up sequence.
  • Monitor pressures: low side should be 32 psig +/- 2 psig, air-cooled discharge between 200-280 psig, and water-cooled at about 245 psig.
  • Clean and sanitize the storage bin and provide the service manual to the owner.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Schedule maintenance at least twice a year. During cleaning, ensure electrical power is ON. Follow steps for in-place cleaning and sanitizing using appropriate solutions. Regularly clean the condenser and check for blockages.
Condenser Maintenance
Use compressed air or a brush to clean the condenser, ensuring not to bend the fins. Check fan blade balance and motor bearings. Clean the air-cooled condenser using a vacuum cleaner or coil cleaner.
Service History and Troubleshooting
Before calling for service, check water and power supply. If issues persist after resetting, contact service.

GEM-MFI SERIES Allow 6 “Clearance for Air Circulation Allow 6 “Clearance for Air Circulation A proper installation locates the ice machine indoors, but in a place where the heat and noise it produces are not objectionable. Air cooled machines discharge hot air out the back and must have a minimum of 6 inches of clearance behind the ice machine. Space for maintenance access is also important. If two units are placed side by side on a bin, side access becomes even more important.
