Dear reader: It is universally understood that man's basic needs are food, water and shelter. We give less attention to another daily need - a refreshing, restful night's sleep. The bed is our "nest" for the night. When we are tired or ill, our bed should feel as welcoming and nurturing as a mother's love. And yet, many of us fail to experi- ence the cozy warmth and optimal benefits of a truly comforting and comfortable bed. Indeed, some of us avoid bedtime as long as possible, thus denying our bodies adequate time to restore and t has long been my belief that a properly planned bedroom and...

Man's relationship with wool. The human being is part of nature and thus, entirely dependent upon it. With his sparse covering of hair, man is, as a species, more closely related to fur-bearing animals than to animals with feathers or scales. For example., for thousands of years man has protected himself from harsh weather with animal skins and wool. Thus began a close relationship between man and wool. How deep this relationship goes is not known. However, it is a fact that premature babies have a significantly greater chance of survival if they are laid on 100% virgin wool instead of...

There's sheep-wool 100% virgin sheep wool comes from living animals and is once washed. Pure new wool also comes from living sheep but con- tains proportions of other materials (e.g. synthetic products), is treated against moth attack, bleached, dyed and coated, so that it can be continuously washed. Wool and fleece from dead sheep is called sheep wool and has no healing properties, because it often still contains residues from tanning, dying and processing. Many people who claim to be allergic to wool are, in fact, not reacting to the wool itself, but to the chemical treatment of new wool,...

We use only the best quality - 100% virgin sheep wool, which for the sake of simplicity we shall hereafter refer to as "wool". Hiisler Nest works exclusively with "open-air wool", from animals which have grown up outdoors. Experience shows that such wool is more resistant to wear and cleaner, since the sheep do not lie in their own excrement. If after shearing, it is expertly washed, care- fully finished and regularly aired during use, it can "live" for up to 10 additional years. The average person loses between 200 and 500 ml of perspiration in bed each night. Wool has the ability to...

Living things, Like all natural, living things, wool needs to breathe. Only in this way can it provide a pleasantly dry environment in the bed. It should lie over the mattress like a blanket so that it can be easily aired. Wool would be useless under the mattress; it would be crushed by the weight and unable to breathe. Often wool used on top of some mattresses is sprayed with fixatives during pro- cessing, stretched and stitched under a stiff ticking. One can ima- gine what this woollen layer looks like after a few months wit- hout the ability to breathe or even be aired. And like all...

versus down. Anyone who tries to blow smoke through a down-filled quilt does not succeed. Quite simply because birds feathers provide an airtight barrier, so that birds can fly or swim. The smoke therefore gets caught in the "down layers", and the quilt still smells of smo- ke days later. It is quite different with a 100% virgin wool quilt, which lets smoke pass through unhindered and is already odour- free again after a few hours. What can we conclude from this? Since it is much more difficult for moisture to penetrate a down-filled quilt, you sweat more readily than under a woollen quilt....

A point in favour, though If extreme protection against cold is required - for spending the night in sub-zero temperatures on a trip in the high mountains, or in unheated rooms in winter - down bedding offers unsur- passed protection.

Mattresses made from natural latex are softer and more flexible than traditional mattresses. They impart a cosy feeling in the bed, prevent pressure points and do not disturb blood circulation or Latex has definite advantages over synthetic foam material. It is bacteriostatic without the need of added toxic substances and it emits no harmful vapours over time. It remains constant in its firmness. In addition, latex is much more elastic than foam mate- rial and is far superior in softness. When latex is no longer servi- ceable, it can be discarded without harm to the environment. Not all...

Latex materials Latex mattresses are produced from various raw materials. Latex consists partly of the milky liquid emulsion from rubber trees and derivatives of mineral oil. There are various mixtures on the mar- ket with a more or less high degree of rubber tree milk. Each pro- ducer has his own "recipe" which offers different latex quality Hiisler Nest uses only latex from rubber tree milk. Furthermore, no CFC's are used in production; the mattresses are tested for harmful substances and they conform to the guidelines and limits issued by the QUL (Quality Association of Environmentally...
