Introduction to ETFE Membranes
ETFE (Ethyl Tetrafluorethylen) membranes are increasingly used for transparent and translucent roofs and facades due to their high performance. These fluoropolymer membranes are ideal for projects requiring transparency to natural light combined with lightweight structures, offering economical and sustainable solutions.

Applications and Systems
ETFE membranes are primarily used in pneumatic, multi-layered, or single-layered systems. The maximum span of these systems depends on the imposed loads and geometry. Multi-layered systems can accommodate varying physical and energy requirements.

Material Characteristics
  • Life Span: ETFE is highly resistant to environmental influences, with a life expectancy exceeding 20 years when used according to specifications.
  • Fire Rating: ETFE membranes are flame retardant, meeting DIN 4102 B1 and other international standards, with minimal risk of material falling during a fire.
  • Cleaning: The membrane is self-cleaning, with dirt washed off by rain. In low-rainfall areas, cleaning with eco-friendly detergents is recommended.
  • Maintenance: While maintenance-free, annual inspections are advised to detect and repair any damage early. Regular inspection of the perimeter clamping system and primary structure is also recommended.

Translucency and Light Transmission
ETFE membranes offer about 95% translucency within the 400-600 Nm range, with 12% scattered light and 88% direct light. A three-layered module has a light transmission degree of 0.7 for vertical incidence. The membrane significantly reduces harmful UV-B and UV-C radiation.

Thermal Insulation (U-values)
  • One-layered membranes: ≈ 5.1 W/m²K
  • Two-layered membranes: ≈ 3.5 W/m²K
  • Three-layered membranes: ≈ 2.0 W/m²K
  • Four-layered membranes: ≈ 1.5 W/m²K
These values may vary based on test procedures.

Environmental Compatibility
ETFE membranes are 100% recyclable and have a low mass compared to glass. A double-layered ETFE cushion covering 500 m² has a material mass of approximately 0.15 m³. The system can be installed using foil, aluminium clamp-plates, and steel bolts, avoiding non-separable connections.

Additional Features
ETFE membranes can be produced in limited colors and printed with patterns to reduce solar gain or achieve specific designs while maintaining transparency.

ETFE Foil-1

Transparent or translucent ETFE membranes Fluorpolymer membranes made of high performance ETFE are used in increasing numbers for transparent and highly translucent roofs and/or facades. The following technical data refers to ETFE foils only. The data of other, less common, transparent foils may be different. Transparent membranes are becoming more and more important, particularly where transparency to the whole spectrum of natural light is required, and is to be combined with a lightweight structure to create an economical and sustainable solution. ETFE membrane is principally used in pneumatic, multi-layered or single layered systems. The maximum span depends on the imposed loads and required geometry of the individual elements. Multi-layered systems allow projects with varying physical and energy requirements to be accommodated. Owing to the outstanding physical characteristics of this material a long life expectancy is guaranteed, with no reduction in aesthetic appearance. ETFE Foil-2

Detailed characteristics: Life span: As ETFE is one of the most stable organic combinations; resistance to all environmental influ-ences is very high. Life expectancy is far beyond 20 years if the material is used according to the specifica-tions. Fire rating: ETFE membranes are flame retardant according to DIN 4102 B1and other international stan-dards. Tests have shown that, due to the low mass of the membrane (which is only between 0.08 and 0.25 mm thick); there is minimal danger of any material falling in the event of fire. Cleaning: ETFE membrane is self-cleaning due to its chemical composition,...
