The method became a major industry in Europe during the 19th century with Michael Thonet and his five sons developing an empire built on steam bent wood, mainly for cafe furniture. At the turn of the century in 1900, Bohemian carpenters brought steam bending knowledge and tricks to Gemla in Sweden. We quickly became experts. The factory was started already in 1861. That makes us Sweden’s oldest currently active furniture manufacturer. Since several decades we also handle the renovation of older Gemla furniture, as well as purchasing and refurbishing vintage products for various projects....
