Since 1981 over 6,400 Fortis units have been erected worldwide and more are being added almost daily. Our sturdy reliable wind turbines operate across all continents, meeting a variety of applications such as powering rural farms and homes, public buildings, small and medium-size businesses. A substantial number of these Fortis turbines operate in highly demanding environments including those facing frequent exposure to high winds and harsh operating conditions. Typical examples include turbines operating in Mauretania's hot, windy and sand-swept Sahara desert, or extreme cold temperatures...

Power generation Fortis rotor blades were designed for minimized aerodynamic noise and are manufactured from common glass fibre reinforced plastics composite material. Another distinct design feature is that the rotor and high- performance Fortis permanent magnet generator are directly connected. Because these two main components operate as a single assembly, an otherwise required gearbox could be In many countries with a well functioning electricity grid system, the power generated by our turbines can be fed directly into the network. This rather complex process is achieved with the aid of...

Safe operation Another Fortis key product characteristic is their uncomplicated mechanical hinged vane system that facilitates two main functions. A first function is to make the rotor always face the prevailing wind direction. Secondly, at wind speeds from 8 m/s and up the vane mechanism gradually "folds up". The rotor plane's relative position thereby changes from initially perpen- dicular to the prevailing wind towards increasingly inclined. The wind now does not blow anymore against a full circle but to a smaller oval shape instead, whereas aerodynamic rotor blade efficiency declines...

Wind turbine yield potential largely depends upon rotor swept area and wind speed cubed (V3). If for instance the rotor diameter increases from 5m to 6 metres (+20%), rotor swept area increases by 44%. And at 6 m/s the energy content is 73% higher compared to wind blowing at 5 m/s. Wind turbines are mounted on towers, especially to overcome ground drag Yield determining factors Ground drag is the friction between moving air masses and the earth surface. The higher this ground drag, the more kinetic energy in the moving air (wind) is "lost", and no more available for power generation. As a...
