Product Specifications
The Smaragd collection includes various designs and colors, meeting EN-ISO 10582 standards for heterogeneous polyvinyl chloride floor coverings. It consists of five layers and is suitable for commercial (Class 34) and industrial (Class 43) applications.
Technical Standards and Accreditations
Smaragd complies with standards such as EN 14041, EN 13501-1 for fire reaction, EN 13893 for slip resistance, and EN 1815 for body voltage. It is produced under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
Material Composition
The primary materials include PVC, plasticizers, calcium carbonate, stabilizers, glass fiber, and pigments. The production process involves multiple stages, including the preparation of PVC plastisols and application of topcoats.
Environmental Impact and Life Cycle Assessment
A full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) covers production, transportation, installation, use, and end-of-life stages. The functional unit is one square meter of installed product, with impacts calculated for one year of service life.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation involves specific techniques with approximately 6% material waste. Recommended cleaning includes vacuuming and wet cleaning, with energy and resource consumption detailed for high-traffic areas.
End of Life
At the end of its life, Smaragd is mechanically deconstructed, with 40% going to landfill and 60% incinerated. Energy recovery from incineration is considered in the LCA.
Conclusion
This EPD provides stakeholders with detailed insights into the environmental performance of Smaragd, supporting informed decision-making and highlighting the product's value and benefits.
Life Cycle Assessment Overview
The document is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report for Smaragd resilient floor covering, following ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards. It details the environmental impacts across various life cycle stages, using the GaBi 6 Software System for data modeling.
Allocation Processes and Data Quality
Allocation rules comply with the Product Category Rules (PCR). Data quality meets PCR specifications, with foreground data based on 2012 averages, ensuring geographical representation for the supply chain.
System Boundaries and Power Mix
The LCA covers production, transport, installation, use, and end-of-life stages. The GaBi 6 EU27 power dataset is used for electricity generation, relevant to the manufacturing location in Kaluga, Russia.
Environmental Impacts and Toxicity
The report presents environmental impacts such as Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Layer Depletion, and Acidification Potential, with production being the main contributor. The USEtox model assesses human and eco-toxicity impacts.
EN15804 Results
Calculations are verified according to EN 15804, detailing resource use and waste categories across life cycle stages.
Specifications and Standards
The document references several international standards and guidelines related to life cycle assessment (LCA) and environmental product declarations (EPD), including DIN EN ISO 14044 and ISO 14025.
Procedures and Methodologies
Methodologies for conducting life cycle assessments and creating environmental product declarations are discussed, referencing the ILCD Handbook and CEN/TR 15941 standard.
Product Category Rules (PCR) and Regulations
Specific product category rules for flooring materials are outlined, and the document references REGULATION (EU) No 305/2011 for marketing construction products in the EU.
Recommendations and Best Practices
Recommendations for ecodesign and environmental information sheets for resilient flooring are provided, aiming to improve the environmental performance of flooring products.

ffediXD FLOORING SYSTEMS Smaragd - a well-proven material for decades. The heterogeneous structure gives the material extraordinary properties, resistant to any challenge faced by modern floor. In addition, the unique upper layer of PUR Pearl ™ provides even better protection and at the same time does not require laborious maintenance during its life cycle. Forbo was the first flooring manufacturer to publish a complete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report verified by CML in 2000. In addition, Forbo is now publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for all products including full LCA reports. This EPD uses recognized flooring Product Category Rules and includes additional information to show the impacts on human health and eco-toxicity. By offering the complete story, we hope that our stakeholders will be able to use this document as a tool that will translate the environmental performance of Smaragd into true value and benefits for all our customers and stakeholders alike. Smaragd Resilient Floor Covering Credits from energy substitution are allocated to the production stage, because the gained energy from energy substitution is lower than the energy input in this stage. The same quality of energy is considered. Allocation procedure of reuse, recycling and recovery The installation waste and end of life waste is fed into incineration processes. Incineration processes include cogeneration processes which give thermal and power energy as outputs. It is assumed that this recovered energy offsets that produced by the European average grid mix and thermal energy generation...
