EXTERIOR CUSTOM Project: Southampton City Cruise Project brief The bespoke sextuple conic structure is complicated by a 46m walkway with a radius. Patterning the fabric for a structure that is curved was an engineering challenge and one that we achieved with great success. The 40m x 8m canopy was installed as a single fabric unit requiring a unique triple crane lift to hoist it onto the steel framework. Design solution The walkway canopy also serves as a meet & greet space with integrated seating and lighting around the columns. The design features iconic ‘cake stack’ headrings adding to the nautical theme of the coastal port. Over £9 million was invested in refurbishing the UK’s number 1 cruise port, City Cruise Terminal. This investment enables the terminal to accommodate some of the largest cruise vessels afloat. To ensure the space is dry, the structure oversails and undersails connecting buildings and a fabric rain gutter was installed around the perimeter of the canopy. The result is functional and beautiful. Fabric Architecture The art and science of tension
