Smothers Park

Product catalog summary
Project Overview: The Smothers Park project is part of the City of Owensboro's decade-long riverfront development, aimed at transforming the area into a cultural tourism hub. A key feature of this development is a landmark fan-shaped tensile fabric structure located at the river's edge.
Project Brief: The structure features a heavy steel framework and a vast canopy, requiring engineering modifications to the river wall for support. The design process involved multiple iterations to ensure aesthetic harmony with the nearby bridge.
Design Solution: In collaboration with the architect, a barrel-vaulted canopy measuring 52’ x 28’ was created, soaring 33 feet above the river. Supported by five steel masts, the cantilevered structure provides a free-span space for events, enhancing the riverfront's appeal.

Smothers Park-1

EXTERIOR CUSTOM Project: Smothers Park Project brief The structure, with its heavy steel framework and vast canopy, was installed just on the edge of the river. To do this, Fabric Architecture’s specialist in-house Engineers engineered part of the river wall to support the structure. In addition to engineering challenges, getting the design right was crucial. The process involved several iterations, ensuring the structure compliments the bridge in the background. Design solution Working in coordination with the architect, the design result is a barrel vaulted canopy measuring 52’ x 28’. This custom canopy soars 33 feet above the edge of the river. The City of Owensboro has been developing the Riverfront over the past 10 years, making it a cultural hub for tourism. At the end of the walkway to the river is an overlook area featuring a landmark fan-shaped tensile fabric structure. Five steel masts support the cantilevered structure offering freespan space for summer concerts and activities. The vision was achieved and the nautical canopy is one of the highlights of the river front redevelopment. Fabric Architecture The art and science of tension
