GARGANTUA According to an American study, parents and children currently only spend an average of 15 minutes together per day. To improve the quality of this togetherness, Extremis wanted to create a table where children could comfortably sit at the same height as the adults. This was to enable better communication. © designed by Dirk Wynants

When we started Extremis in 1994, we named our first piece Gargantua. It was based on a famous 16th century series of novels by a French monk, Rabelais, describing the life of two giants: Gargantua 10

- whose appetite was unstoppable - and his son Pantagruel. The Gargantua table has a huge tabletop and is even extendable by putting the benches at table top height. The second generation, Pantagruel, is not a better version of his father, he’s just different. There’s no perfect table for everyone, we’ve learnt that each person has a different focus. © designed by Dirk Wynants

ABACHUS Look around you at a party or reception and you will very often see guests grabbing a chair to sit down or just to lean against the back rest. So if you combine an ordinary cocktail table and this desire for support, you end up with the blueprint for Abachus: a high-top table with a real bonus. Six arms to be precise, against which you can lean comfortably. No more lugging chairs, which end up getting in the way anyway, but the ideal tool to enjoy a get-together with relatives, friends, or acquaintances having a drink in honour of Bacchus. © designed by Dirk Wynants

The classic parasol has been around in its current form for more than 2500 years. That makes it about time for an update. The classic parasol has become so familiar that hardly anyone would stop to consider how the design could be improved. But that is a designer’s job. The courage to question familiar values and certainties lies at the root of creativity and innovation. © designed by Dirk Wynants “Tranquillity for the eye in a timeless design.”
