Hazards identification Description of hazards: If cut or machined mechanically, fibre cement sheets will release dust. Inhalation of high concentrations of dust may irritate the airways. The dust may also cause irritation of the eyes and/or skin. Profiled sheets are reinforced with polypropylene strips to improve their impact resistance. No fibre cement product should be walked on, as this will affect its long-term durability, crawling boards must be used. Dangers from mechanical processing (drilling, sawing, grinding, etc.) of the product: • Temporary irritation of eyes, throat and bronchial • Prolonged skin contact may cause slight skin irritation in sensitive individuals • As with most organic and non-organic dusts, prolonged inhalation of excessive dust concentrations can cause chronic bronchitis. • As this product is mainly made from natural raw materials, it may contain traces of quartz. Physical and chemical properties Fibre cement products have edges that are hard and can be abrasive to the skin, therefore suitable gloves should be worn when handling.
