ENERCON WEC TECHNOLOGY ENERCON WEC technology is subject to ongoing development. This helps to ensure that it meets all of the requirements of a regenerative energy system and highly competitive markets, and that it can deliver long-term, cost-optimised solutions in response to growing challenges. ENERCON continues to focus on its proven quality standards and technological innovations in the process. The new functional WEC design seen in the EP3 line reflects the changes in market conditions. By abandoning its trademark teardrop nacelle for a new compact design, ENERCON is offering its customers a new, efficient and cost-optimised WEC range for future wind energy projects under tighter framework conditions. The wind energy converters in the new EP5 platform are based on a comparable compact concept. Worldwide flexibility ENERCON wind energy converters can be easily integrated in grid structures the world over and meet the most demanding of grid requirements. Thanks to their intelligent grid technology, they make a huge contribution to maintaining and improving grid stability. In addition, ENERCON wind energy converters are also suitable for reducing the share of conventional power plants in large interconnected systems required for stability, as well as supplying remote grid areas and stand-alone systems. Tried and tested drive system The tried and tested drive system has been kept for all ENERCON model ranges. The hub and the rotor of the annular generator are directly interconnected to form one solid gearless unit. The rotor unit is borne on a fixed axle pin. Unlike conventional geared systems with a large number of bearing points in a moving drive train, the slow speed of ENERCON’s drive system means it only requires two slow-moving rolling-element bearings. ROTOR BLADE ENERCON rotor blades have an innovative and aerodynamic design for more efficiency and maximum yield. In order to guarantee optimum blade properties, ENERCON carries out complex numerical simulations and extensive wind tunnel tests. Noise and erosion reduction are equally important design criteria considered in the (further) development of the rotor blades. The Trailing Edge Serrations (TES) used on ENERCON rotor blades are specially tailored to the blade profile and are an effective and certified solution for wide-spectrum noise reduction. Optional features, such as the ENERCON blade heating system for sites at risk of icing, can be easily integrated. TOWER ENERCON towers are designed for optimum load dynamics. They are manufactured as several individual tower sections. Both steel and precast concrete towers are subject to the strictest quality standards to ensure lasting stability and a long service life. Depending on the WEC type and site, the towers are available in various hub heights. E-MODULE The E-module is located in the wind energy converter tower base. Power cabinets and other components are arranged on different levels. Inverters are used here to convert direct current into alternating current that conforms to grid requirements. Inverter technology and control systems are some of ENERCON’s key competencies. Operating modes for noise optimisation ENERCON wind energy converter operation can be noise-optimised to ensure compliance with the noise emission levels permissible at the site at all times. If set parameters occur, the WEC automatically switches to a predefined operating mode. PRODUCT PORTFOLIO GENERATOR ENERCON’s WEC concept is based on the directly driven, separately excited annular generator. The magnetic fields required for power generation are created electrically. The new EP5 platform WECs are also directly driven. However, annular generators with permanent magnets (PMG) are used here. The annular generator is made up of rotor and stator and forms the key component. Together with the hub, it provides an optimum flow of energy. The sophisticated wind energy converter technology makes for maximum running smoothness, low sound emissions and a long service life. ENERCON’s annular generator is a multi-polar synchronous generator with no direct grid coupling. Output voltage and frequency vary with the speed and are converted for output to the grid via a DC link and an inverter, with the result that there is a high level of speed variability. The new EP3 range features form-wound aluminium coils preformed by machine in place of the usual continuous copper wire windings. This method, used here for the first time, enables shorter production times and reduced weight. Since the generator juts out as part of the new WEC design, and the surrounding machine house in the generator area is no longer present, a special complete enclosure has been developed to protect against external influences.
