Madeleine Castaing was a renowned French decorator known for her unique style that combined elements from Napoleon III, English Regency, Directoire, and Biedermeier. Her style was characterized by a mix of ocelot prints, floral chintz, and bayadère stripes, often using mahogany or rattan furniture. Her color palette frequently contrasted black with off-white and included her signature Castaing green and blue. She was the first French decorator to gain international fame and influenced many contemporary decorators. Madeleine, à la personnalité fantasque a inventé un style qui est aujourd’hui une référence. Un style bien à elle, où elle mêle le Napoléon III, le Regency anglais et le Directoire avec le Biedermeier. Tout le contraire du minimalisme. Ainsi l’imprimé ocelot, ou lierre, souvent au sol, côtoie le chintz fleuri et les rayures bayadère, la fonte, les lampes en opaline. Les meubles sont en acajou ou en rotin. Quant à sa palette de couleurs, le noir contraste avec le blanc cassé, et Madeleine Castaing associe si souvent un vert tilleul et un bleu ciel qu’on les appelle le bleu ou le vert Castaing....
