studio work Crystal virus: Massive infection Massive infection is a large table that has completely been overrun by Crystal virus vases by designer Pieke Bergmans working in collaboration with glass blower Gert Bullée of Royal Leerdam, especially for Droog. Intrigued by the meeting between crystal and the furniture, between design and art, 30 searing hot crystal bubbles have been pressed against the wood, each defining the shape of the crystal and leaving black burns in the process. The making process is a spectacular event, and what remains is a series of 30 unique crystal sculptures and a table covered in intricate burn marks. She has worked for companies such as Rosenthal, Fabrica Treviso Italy, Charles Bergmans Shoe Design Studio, Marcel Wanders Studio and Design Studio Iglu Hong Kong. Her modus operandi is to alter existing production processes to come to new forms and functions. Her inspiration and opportunities come from each industry and every different material. In cooperation with factories, she explores their production facilities and manipulates them. The goal is to make ‘personalized mass production’ where irregularities are ruled in.
