Product catalog summary
Introduction to STYROFOAM Solutions
STYROFOAM™ blue extruded foamed polystyrene boards are engineered for superior thermal performance and strength in construction and engineering projects. Dow Building Solutions offers various grades tailored for specific applications, such as FLOORMATE™ for flooring, ROOFMATE™ for roofing, and PERIMATE™ for below-ground use. Key features include low thermal conductivity, high compressive strength, minimal water absorption, and ease of use.
Developing STYROFOAM Solutions
STYROFOAM™ Solutions offer a variety of insulation options, with detailed guides available on the Dow Building Solutions website.
Environmental Standards
STYROFOAM™ products are free of HCFCs, comply with EC Regulation No 2037/2000, and have an ODP of zero and a GWP of less than five. They are produced under ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 standards.
Characteristics and Performance
STYROFOAM™ is resistant to rot, mould, and most construction materials but should be shielded from prolonged sunlight exposure. It is non-biodegradable and can be recycled, used as landfill, or incinerated. Available in various compressive strengths, STYROFOAM™ is classified as Euroclass E for fire performance.
Product Overview
STYROFOAM™ products have specific heat, thermal expansion, and working temperature ranges. The ROOFMATE™ MinK system minimizes insulation thickness due to rainwater cooling. PERIMATE™ DI-A is designed for below-ground insulation with water drainage features. FLOORMATE™-A is available in three grades for different load requirements.
Product Data Tables
Tables provide detailed specifications for thermal resistance, thermal conductivity, compressive strength, water absorption, and dimensions for various STYROFOAM™ products.
Useful References
Includes building regulations, BRE publications, and British Standards relevant to STYROFOAM™ applications.
Fire Performance of Expanded Polystyrene Materials
Expanded polystyrene materials, such as STYROFOAM™, contain a flame retardant additive to inhibit ignition from small fire sources but are combustible and can burn rapidly if exposed to intense fire. Protection from direct fire exposure during shipment, storage, installation, and use is crucial.
Relevant Standards and Codes
The document references several British and European standards, including BS 6229:2003 for flat roofs, BS EN 1991-1-1:2005 for structural actions, and BS EN 13501-1:2007+A1:2009 for fire classification of construction products. These standards provide guidelines for building design and construction, such as load calculations, waterproofing, and thermal performance.

Meeting environmental standards STYROFOAM™ is manufactured under the BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System (BSI certificate Q05968). Dow also operates an Environmental Management System which has accomplished ISO 14001:2004 (BSI Certificate EMS 547690). Concern about ozone depletion in the stratosphere has led to international agreements to phase out the use of ozone depleting chemicals. All STYROFOAM™ products are hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) free and comply with the requirements of EC Regulation No 2037/2000 (1 October 2000) on substances which deplete the ozone layer. STYROFOAM™...

Surface characteristics Dow STYROFOAM™ boards are blue. All boards have a smooth homogeneous skin on both sides with the exception of ROOFMATE™ LG-A and PERIMATE™ DI-A. STYROFOAM™ has a low susceptibility to rot, and mould or fungal growth is therefore minimised. Chemical Structural STYROFOAM™ boards are available in a range of compressive strengths to suit different load bearing requirements. Fire Information on aspects of fire performance of extruded polystyrene in building applications is given in BS 6203: 2003, ‘Guide to fire characteristics and fire performance of expanded polystyrene materials...

Recommendations STYROFOAM™ products include FLOORMATE™, ROOFMATE™ and PERIMATE™. STYROFOAM™ products contain a flame retardant additive to inhibit accidental ignition from a small fire source. STYROFOAM™ is, however, combustible and if exposed to an intensive fire may burn rapidly. During shipment, storage, installation and use STYROFOAM™ products should not be exposed to flames or other ignition sources. Fire classification is based on small scale tests, which may not reflect the reaction of the products in its end use state under actual fire conditions. STYROFOAM™ products should, when installed,...
