With the aim of enhancing everyday life, Design House Stockholm has been changing the way people think about their living and working space for many years. The secret to our success is that we work with an extensive network of more than 60 independent designers, in the same way publishing houses work with authors. We collaborate with both new, up-and-coming talent and established names. Although the majority of our designers are from Scandinavia, we work with designers from all over the world in order to find that special Scandinavian touch. Our collection of functional and aesthetically...

We just couldn’t resist. Along with our tableware and lighting, textiles and glasswork, we simply had to expand our range of furniture, as well as going into high-end fashion. We fell in love with Lisa Widén’s terrific idea for a cottonwool chair that is the right size for everyone. Then we included Lena Bergström’s rug with that special citywise Scandinavian feeling inspired by birch trees. Anna Bonnevier’s graduation project Numb was just as easy to choose, a fashion collection inspired by architecture and dystopian novels. All three of them have this timeless appeal that we label Slow...

it’s necessary and useful, and if it is, also make it beautiful. By beautiful we mean visually appealing, with a soft touch, and a treat for all the senses. We constantly search for creative contemporary poetry that will further expand our distinct and unique design collection. Our goal is Scandinavian design with a twist, which has the power to surprise; design that makes everyday living that little bit better; design that empowers; design that makes us smile. One of the secrets in our quest for new design classics that transcend market trends is to let the designs develop in total freedom...

Transcendent Let Cloud slide on its hidden curved rail to provide a comfortable sitting position. A soft shape that suits tall and short people alike. The seat can even switch places with the back support. Lisa Widén’s design has surprisingly modest dimensions, and will fit into any interior without dominating it. Cloud manages to be both small and comfy, with a design which is truly contemporary but nonetheless has a hint of the 1950s. It is a play on tradition, twisting conventions ever so slightly. “Imagine being able to rest on a cloud! My goal was to create an upholstered chair that...

Ready-made A construction lamp from the garage and the workshop, always handy and within reach in a dirty and greasy environment. Hanging from the ceiling, standing on the floor, lying on a table. Doesn’t it work fine just as it is? Almost. To bring it inside, to turn an everyday object into something special, some refinement was required. But just a little. The flimsy steel wire needed some toughness, solidity and more refined angles. And why not change the colour from strong black to gold? Or chrome-plating? The Work Lamp presents itself as a ready-made item with added character and...

SurfacE Rugs are anything but old-fashioned. They add comfort and create intimacy, as well as providing an aesthetic experience, and a sense of wellbeing down on the floor. No wonder Lena Bergström has added a pillow for even more comfort. The Björk rugs and their patterned structure, are definitely city-dwellers with a modern and enriched textile quality, as well as stylish and protective leather edging. Lena’s conviction is that a rug’s flat textile surface is just as natural in the home as stone and wood. “To me, the rugs are poetry, like a quiet whisper within the room.” The colour...

Interactive Light hidden away in a box, to be brought out and exposed. A lamp that is adjusted by a touch of the hand, doing away with dimmers and superfluous technology. A lamp that is both unusual and possesses a self-evident utility. Jonas Hakaniemi’s Box Light delivers an elegant sense of sufficiency; an ambient lamp with simple manual operation. This is as straightforward as interactive design can get. “Touch the lamp! Create your own light by sliding the lid,” says Jonas, adding that Box Light developed from an idea about using recycled materials for a lamp. The final result has...

Maximalism Both a table and a shelf. A futuristic shape with a maximalistic attitude, allowing maximal storage space on minimal floor space. Just rotate the planes and let Twist Table expand or contract, like a multi-storey table in front of the sofa or additional shelving by the wall. Ph ilip Edis found his inspiration for a simple and space-saving device in the circus: “I was entranced by a clown spinning several hula hoops when I was a child. With Twist Table I want to transmute that beautiful movement into a single, yet adjustable image.” A lot of work has gone into creating a perfect...

Graphic Open Arrow and extract 95 mm of precision-milled powdercoated aluminium. In a precise horizontal position the softedged hanger supports hefty loads, but is just as useful for a newly ironed shirt and a pair of trousers. If you close it there are still three hooks on which to hang various items. When not in use, Arrow will adorn the wall like an iconic graphic symbol. Or you can put several together to create various patterns, just waiting to be folded out and used. Gustav Hallén found his inspiration for Arrow’s innovative design while out sailing. After scaling the rigging and...

Formlessness A slight draught, and candle wax drips and runs onto candle holders, destroying the perfect symmetry of their design. Not so with Lava, where the “eruption” of the candle generates soft, natural lava-like shapes along the edges. Louise Hederström has turned a predicament into a virtue with a design that recreates the candle holder during each use. “When I was a child I used to sit entranced by Elvis Presley’s Burning Love in my headphones, ‘Lord almighty, I feel my temperature rising, Higher, higher, It’s burning through to my soul’, and that tune has been an inspiration ever...
