XY180 is a 3-piece collection of luminaires designed by OMA. The collection was born from a fascination with point, line and surface; key characters in the discourse of architecture. OMA is an international practice founded by Rem Koolhaas, operating within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism. —The design ambition was to step away from a luminaire that simply relied on shape, towards a design focused on performance—

The collection uses precise geometric proportions. The base elements, which include a tube light and a spot light in either a discreet 4,1W or a powerful 7,1W caliber, can be combined with a hinge, to generate countless light conditions, both essential and complex. The dimmable tube lights give ambient lighting, democratic and shared, while the spot lights, in two different outfits, provide focused lighting, isolated and hierarchal. The different versions are for both individual and shared workspace, but can also be applied to domestic and public interior spaces

By exposing the luminaire and giving it the ability to hinge, the fixture becomes the main feature as it is able to shift and generate into multiple configurations; a product that can contribute to the manifestation of space, not only by the light it emits, but also by its physical presence. The degree of adjustability that comes from the hinging fixture, is an agent of opportunism. It has the ability to suit, and remain relevant to the ever-changing demands of a lighting system in a space.

— This spot is a sort of ‘jolly’ plugin to hack the otherwise strong linearity of the system. It boosts the presence of the fixture when it is used as a stand-alone, and not in serial repetition— In 2018 the XY180 collection will be extended with the bold and versatile “Punk” spot light. Its extravagant shape adds a powerful element to the line and upgrades the design statement of its environment.
