Product catalog summary

Overview

The document presents detailed technical information and installation guidelines for a traditional flat clay roof tile, also known as Alicantina or French/Marseille Tile. It emphasizes the tile's versatility, ease of installation, cost efficiency, durability, and watertight properties.

Product Features

  • Design: Large format tiles (11 units/m²) with double interlocking on sides and top for enhanced waterproofing.
  • Installation: Crossbond laying method allows quick and adaptable installation, especially suitable for restoration projects.
  • Durability: High breakage resistance due to clay composition and manufacturing process, exceeding standard flexural strength.
  • Packaging: Pallets contain 180 or 240 units, reducing handling and installation costs.

Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 466 mm (length) x 260 mm (width) x 55 mm (thickness) with ±2% tolerance.
  • Weight: 3.6 kg (7.93 lbs) per tile.
  • Coverage: 11 tiles per square meter.
  • Flexural Strength (EN 538): >1200 N.
  • Water Impermeability (EN 539-1): Complies with Level 1.
  • Frost Resistance (EN 539-2): Complies with 150 freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Geometric Characteristics (EN 1024): Flatness and straightness ≤ 1.5%.

Installation Guidelines

Laying Patterns

  • Broken Bond Pattern: Alternating joints with half and full tiles to ensure structural integrity.
  • Straight Bond Pattern: Continuous joints with tiles aligned vertically for a uniform appearance.

Starter Course

Begin with a full tile at the eave with an 8 cm (3.15") overhang. Tiles at the eave overlap the side courses for proper fit.

Fixation

  • Tiles must be securely fastened by nails, screws, or clips.
  • Fixation frequency depends on roof exposure and height; at least one in five tiles fixed horizontally, with all tiles fixed in high wind areas.

Special Roof Areas

  • Ridge and Hip: Ridge tiles installed facing away from prevailing winds with minimum 5 cm overlap; covered with breathable waterproof underlayment (e.g., Alu-Roll).
  • Valley: Requires clear drainage path with valley battens and waterproof underlayment; tiles laid parallel to valley line with minimum 15 cm gap at center.

Roof Accessories

A comprehensive range of ceramic and non-ceramic accessories is available, including ridge tiles, hip starters, ventilation tiles, chimney covers, and waterproof membranes. Accessories come in standard colors matching the flat tiles.

Ventilation and Underlayment

  • Proper ventilation is critical for roof longevity and energy efficiency; recommended minimum is 1 ventilation tile (Q21) per 7 m², with at least two per roof surface.
  • Ventilation must allow airflow through eave and ridge without obstruction.
  • Underlayment is mandatory below minimum pitch values or in ice dam-prone regions to prevent water infiltration.

Roof Slope and Fixation Recommendations

Fixation requirements vary by roof pitch and exposure:

  • Lower slopes and protected locations require less fixation.
  • Higher slopes and exposed locations require more frequent or full fixation of tiles.
  • For hips longer than 12 m, full waterproof underlayment and enhanced ventilation are mandatory.

Color and Quality Notes

  • Color variations within batches are normal and intentional for aesthetic reasons.
  • Tiles are natural products with inherent shade variations; blending tiles during installation is recommended.
  • Manufacturer reserves the right to modify dimensions, weights, and packaging without prior notice.

Critical Recommendations and Best Practices

  • Follow local building codes strictly, especially regarding ventilation and minimum slope.
  • Use breathable waterproof underlayments on ridges, hips, and valleys.
  • Ensure proper fixation to prevent tile displacement due to wind or sliding.
  • Maintain ventilation pathways free from mortar or cement to avoid moisture-related damage.
  • Calculate actual tile layout dimensions on-site due to natural dimensional variations.

Summary

This traditional flat clay roof tile system offers a balance of aesthetic appeal, durability, and cost efficiency. Its design and installation methods ensure watertightness and adaptability to various roof types, with comprehensive accessory options and strict adherence to ventilation and fixation standards critical for long-term performance.

TIP - Colour variations within one batch, affecting the whole of that batch and produced specifically for aesthetic reasons, are permissible. - For tiles of one single colour, variations in color due to the ceramic process itself are accepted. The names of the colours shown in the photos, only represent the finishes of the models identified as Flat Roof tile - We recommend not to stack more than 2 pallets.

LAID METHOD STRAIGHT BOND PATTERN - Continuous joints laying 1. The starter course will begin with a full tile from the eave to the ridge, (allowing a 3.15” (8cm) overhang at the eave). 2. The tiles structuring the eave will have to overlap the side course (rake) and fit together one to another. 3. The second course of the tile will lay up directly over the previously installed field tile to the proper exposure and overlapping. See Figure for sequence of installation for fist and succeeding courses of tiles from the eave to the ridge. 4. The left section (vertical terminating end) of the roof...

TIP Widthwise or lengthwise laid suggested in the technical catalogues are theoretical. The roofer must calculate the real widthwise or lengthwise laid of the tiles to be installed according to the methods defined in the rules in force in our installation manual. Tiles are manufactured with natural components and fired at high temperature which generates small dimensional variations. NOTE: A control line between 3 and 5 rows of tiles (maximum) is recommended. *First course batten should be 20 mm (3/4”) higher than all succeeding course battens to provide a vertical alignment and to assure a symmetrical...

TECHNICAL INFORMATION SLOPES / PITCHES The minimum pitch standard recommendations should always be followed (see values in the referral table). On all pitches below the standard recommended minimums, or in regions where ice dams may occur, a waterproof underlayment on the entire deck MUST be applied. Most problems with water-shedding roof installations occur from water that migrates through the joints of the tiles through capillarity action, wind-driven rain, and runoff or ice damming. Because of this possibility, the underlayment is critical to the success of the roof. WITH UNDERLAYMENT WITHOUT...
